Description	:	Steven Brinkmeyer, age 77, of Hubbard passed away Wednesday, June 3, 2020, from surgery complications at the VA Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa. Steven Arthur Brinkmeyer was born on May 23,1943 in the southwest bedroom of their farmhouse southwest of Hubbard. Steven was the second of nine children born to Freeman and Alvina (Stole) Brinkmeyer. He was baptized at Zion Evangelical and Reformed Church in Hubbard. Read More	Steven Brinkmeyer, age 77, of Hubbard passed away Wednesday, June 3, 2020, from surgery complications at the VA Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa. Steven Arthur Brinkmeyer was born on May 23,1943 in the southwest bedroom of their farmhouse southwest of Hubbard. Steven was the second of nine children born to Freeman and Alvina (Stole) Brinkmeyer. He was baptized at Zion Evangelical and Reformed Church in Hubbard. In 1950 the family moved to Prairie Farm, Wisconsin. Steven was confirmed at the United Lutheran Church in Prairie Farm. In 1960 the family returned to Hubbard. Steven was planning to stay in Wisconsin to finish his senior year. At the last minute he changed his mind, jumped in the car, and moved back with the family. He graduated from Hubbard High School in 1961. Upon graduation he moved to Minneapolis to work. In the fall of 1961, he decided to go to Barber College in Des Moines and enrolled in the spring of 1962. During his lifetime he worked as a barber, owned and operated a field tiling business, worked as a salesman and a columnist. Steven joined the Naval Reserve and went on active duty October 1965. This was during the Viet Nam War, but he was fortunate and was stationed in Hawaii on Ford Island in Pearl Harbor as a yeoman for the Chief of Staff of the Admiral. He gave the Admiral many haircuts during his time in Hawaii. On June 18, 1966 Steven married Susan Boeke at the Zion United Church of Christ in Hubbard. Their first year of marriage was spent in Hawaii as Steven was serving his second year in the Navy. He was offered the opportunity to continue serving and go to Taiwan with the Admiral but decided to return to Hubbard. Steven was a member of the Zion United Church of Christ in Hubbard. He and Susan served as Zion youth sponsors. He was also a Boy Scout leader, member of the Hubbard Jaycees, and Hubbard Chamber of Commerce. Steven wrote an entertaining weekly column for the Hubbard Radcliffe Signal Review and the South Hamilton Record News for twenty-two years. In 1987 Steven was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) with the progression of the disease going from being mobile on his own to eventually using a motorized wheelchair. Through all the physical challenges and decline in health he never lost his warm smile and sense of humor. Steven became a member of the Iowa Paralyzed Veterans of America (IPVA) located in Des Moines, Iowa and served as secretary of the Board of Directors for many years. He also ramp bowled for many years every Thursday at Plaza Lanes in Des Moines with other members of the IPVA. Steven even made the 600 hundred club at Plaza Lanes. Steven and Susan attended the Annual National Veterans Wheelchair Games for ten years. These were held at different sites across the country. He won many Gold Medals in the events in which he participated. If you knew Steven many friends were made at each of these games. Steven is survived by his wife Susan and son Bradley Jack Brinkmeyer. He was blessed with six grandchildren that brought great joy to his life, Bailey, Cierra, Collin, Zoey, Braxton and Alex. He is survived by his siblings, Jeffrey (Bonnie), Cynthia Lake Jansen, Cathy (Paul) Cory, John (Maride), Rochelle (Charlie) Allen, Linda Beckwith and David (Sylvia) and sister-in-law Lynn Brinkmeyer. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, who meant the world to him along with two aunts and one uncle, and multitudes of cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Freeman and Alvina, brother Richard, brothers-in-law Keith Lake and Warren Jansen, nephew Brent and niece Baby Lake. A quote from Steven’s cousin Jack Murray-“I never heard him say it out loud and he probably wouldn’t have if it occurred to him- but being happy is a choice we make regardless of the circumstances. If anybody exemplifies that statement more than Steven, I’ve never met them.” The world was a better, happier place with Steven in it.
