Schnider Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Steven was born September 28, 1952 in Great Falls, Montana, and raised and educated in Belt, graduating from Belt Valley High School. He married Linda McBride on September 4, 1973, in Belt, and they later divorced in June 1997. Steven joined the U.S. Marine Corps, where he obtained the rank of corporal before being honorably discharged. During his service to his country, Steven was awarded the National Defense Service medal and the Good Conduct medal. He was also rated as an expert with the M-14 rifle. He was employed by the Cascade County Road Department for 20 years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and helping others. Survivors include a daughter, Lisa Assels, of Belt; a son, Daniel Assels, of Bozeman; his father, Charles Assels, of Osburn, ID; brothers, Chuck Assels of Osburn, and Mike Assels, of Kellogg, ID; and a granddaughter, Hailey Assels. He was preceded in death by his mother, Carol Assels. Memorials are suggested to Peace Hospice, 1101 26th St. S., Great Falls, MT 59405. (Obituary from Schnider Funeral Home.)
