Description	:	Steven Robert Nesson, 57 passed away at Dougherty Hospice House, on December 14, 2012, surrounded by his family. With great courage and grace, Steve fought a 9 1/2- month battle against pancreatic cancer. Steve was born on July 25, 1955 in Brookings, SD, the youngest child of Robert and Dorothy Nesson of White, SD. Steve was born on July 25, 1955 in Brookings, SD, the youngest child of Robert and Dorothy Nesson of White, SD. Steve was a baptized and confirmed Christian, maintaining this relationship throughout his life—through church membership, leadership and, most importantly his personal faith commitment shown by how he lived his life. Steve attended Deubrook High School, graduating in 1973, and worked on several area farms as a teenager. Upon graduation, he worked on the track gang for Chicago Northwestern Railroad for a year before entering the Law Enforcement Program in Alexandria, MN, where he also met his future wife. He graduated in 1975, and then began work as a Deputy Sheriff in Faulk County, SD. Steve married Julie Mortier on April 16, 1977 in Marshall, MN. They lived in Flandreau, SD where Steve worked as a Deputy Sheriff for Moody County. Steve left law enforcement work in 1978, moving then to White, SD. Steve began working at American Freight in Sioux Falls, and then at CNW railroad again, before returning to college in Brookings to finish his degree. He enrolled at SDSU in September 1980, graduating in December 1982. Steve worked as though school was his job, but also continued with carpentry jobs, including fixing up their old house. In August 1983 Steve and Julie continued on to Lincoln, NE, where he attended Law School at UNL. Their first child, Adam was born in October 1983. Steve graduated with his Juris Doctorate degree in May 1986, moving to Houston, TX for his first job as an attorney. In May 1987 they returned to South Dakota to be near family and friends. In April 1988 they purchased their current house, which Steve spent many years skillfully crafting into a wonderful family home. Lexi joined the family in April 1990, and Carly in May 1992. As a husband and Dad he shared his gift of humor and love with his family; his children were his students, learning from the master. Steve began his SD law career in Sioux Falls in 1987, working for AJ Swanson and Associates, and then opening Nesson Law Office in 1992. He was an active member of the South Dakota Bar Association, enjoying the relationships and camaraderie as well as many aspects of practicing law. He was passionate about giving a voice to clients who needed the counsel he provided, people who otherwise might be on the fringe, such as criminals, prisoners, and especially people with special needs. Steve continued working into the early fall of this year, until declining health prevented him from going to the office. Steve is survived by his loving family- Julie, his wife of 35 years; Adam, of Sioux Falls, Lexi (Timothy) Kahnk, of Sioux Falls, and Carly of Rapid City. Steve is also survived by his mother, Dorothy Nesson, of White, SD; his brother, Spencer of Huron, SD, and his sister Susan (Ron) Christie of Lake Preston, SD, several nieces and nephews, and a large extended family, including the Mortier family. His father, Robert Nesson, and his sister-in-law, Darlene Nesson, preceded Steve in death. The services that honor the life and the memory of Steve will include a visitation beginning at noon, Sunday, with the family present at Miller Funeral Home, 507 S. Main, downtown Sioux Falls on Sunday evening from 5-7pm, and a Prayer Service at 6:45 pm. The Memorial Service will be at the Calvary Cathedral, 500 S. Main, downtown Sioux Falls on Monday, at 1:30pm officiated by Fr. Tim Fountain. There will be a gathering for family and friends immediately following the service. The private interment will be held at Mount Pleasant Cemetery earlier in the day for family and close friends. Steve chose for memorials to be directed to Here4YOUth, formerly Liberty Center.
