He was a member of the 12th... Read More	HOCKETT, Steven W. - Passed away from natural causes on September 3, 2007. He was 87 years old. He was born November 19, 1919, in Vallejo, CA. He was the son of Seburn Waldo and Ruth Wight Hockett. Steve died the way he lived: brave, strong and fighting until the end. Steve enlisted in the Army Air Corp in 1939. He graduated as a second lieutenant November 1941 and earned his pilot's wings. He was stationed in Hamilton Field. While flying over Sonoma County, he decided this area would be his future home. He was a member of the 12th Fighter Squadron, United States Air Corp. In 1942 he was sent to the South Pacific and stationed at Guadalcanal, where he fought in the Solomon's Island Campaign. He was awarded two Distinguished Flying Crosses and many other medals and honors. He retired a Major in 1949 after contracting polio in 1948. In 1957, after his military service Steve received his Bachelor's Degree in Electronic Engineering from Stanford. Steve worked at Sylvania and other companies as an electronic engineer in the Silicon Valley, in real estate in Santa Rosa, and in the Social Security Administration. Steve was never one to let his disability stop him from living a "normal" life or from providing a normal life for his children. Whether working two jobs to make ends meet, driving the water-ski boat so his children could enjoy their "good legs, " fishing in the old aluminum boat, building machines and engines with his sons or riding a cantankerous pony with his daughter, Steve never let his disability stand in the way. Steve was an animal lover and rarely visited an animal shelter without coming home with a stray. He could sit for hours in his blue chair overlooking the peaceful Sonoma County hills. He never tired of seeing the deer, quail, turkey, and rabbits out his front window, and they would often come to him as he rode his ATV to feed them. Steve's sense of humor always added light to situations- even though it often left us red-faced and mortified. We never thought we'd actually miss his "I ate Hardy" comments, but now we do. Steve married Joanne ("Penny") Nichols in 1953, and they have been married for 54 years. In addition to Joanne, he is survived by his sons Dave, Bill, and Jim (Natasha) Hockett and by his daughters Jane (Glenn) Laetari and Lynn (Marty) McComas, along with grandchildren Scott, Amy, Patrick, Rebecca, and Valerie Hockett, and Hunter and Bradley McComas. He also has two great granddaughters Hanna and Taylor Hockett. He was preceded in death by his brother Jim and his nephew Daniel, and survived by his sisters Priscilla, Mary, Carol, and Walene and his great Aunt Mary Jensen along with numerous nephews and nieces. "Steve, Dad, Grandpa: We will miss you. And we look forward to seeing you in heaven standing tall without canes, braces or wheelchairs." A memorial will be held on Saturday, September 8, 2007, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church at 11:00 p.m., followed by a burial at Santa Rosa Memorial Park, 1900 Franklin Ave., Santa Rosa at 3:00 p.m. Those desiring to make contributions in memory of Steve Hockett may send them to: Disabled American Veterans or Lutheran World Relief Published in the Press Democrat from September 6 to September 7, 2007
