Read More	City Crossing Again Claims Lives of Two Police and county authorities assisted by Pennsylvania Ry. officials, Monday were making an inquiry into the automobile-train crash which occurred at 4 a.m. Sunday and claimed the lives of two Lima men, S. A. Carey, 49, of 154 Grove-av, and William Zerkel, 43, of E. Pearl-st. The accident was at the Jackson-st crossing, the same place where four persons were killed in an early morning crash three years ago. The crash Sunday was just an hour before the arrival of the crossing watchman. The intersection is guarded by gates from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. Gates at both the Jackson and Jefferson-st crossings are operated from the same tower. Carey and Zerkel were on their way to one of the lakes south of Lima on a fishing trip. Carey, a carpenter contractor, called for Zerkel, who was his partner. It is thought that the two men drove south from Pearl-st, intending to go to Market-st so as to reach the highway leading south. HURLED 100 FEET The men had just reached the crossing when No. 25, a westbound limited passenger train enroute to Chicago, crashed into the automobile. The impact hurled the machine a distance of 100 feet down the right of way. The crushed bodies of the two men were found in the wreckage. Death was instantaneous. Following the accident, the locomotive was brought to a halt by Engineer Herbert F. Marper, of Ft. Wayne, and members of the train crew, including Conductor W. F. Dibble, of Ft. Wayne, hurried to the assistance of the men. Both Carey and Zerkel were killed instantly, the passenger crew reported. Dr. Frank Smith, county coroner, was called to the scene and pronounced death due to accidental causes. Carey died of a fractured skull and Zerkel's neck was broken. Zerkel is survived by a sister, Mrs. Albert Nungester, 424 E. McKibben-st, and two brothers, Levil Zerkel, of Lima, and John Zerkel, of Wapakoneta. He was born in Hume and had been a resident of Lima practically all of his life. FUNERALS ARRANGED Funeral services for Zerkel will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Hume Methodist church with the Rev. Ray Dotson, of New Hampshire, officiating. Burial will be in St. Matthews cemetery near Cridersville. Carey is survived by a widow; three sons, Ralph, Clarence and Harry, all of Lima, and two daughters, Mrs. Richard Ashburn, of Cincinnati, and Hazel Carey, at home. Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Methodist church in Alger, with the Rev. A. S. Watkins, of the Wesley M. E. church, Lima, officiating. Burial will be in Alger cemetery.
