Hanford Journal Hanford, Kings Co., California Tuesday, 16 OCTOBER 1894 LOST A GOOD CITIZEN -- Strong MERRILL, After 2 Months of Suffering, Is Now at Rest -- Strong MERRILL, recently Deputy Sheriff and the Republican nominee for Assessor, died at his residence in this city at about 9 o'clock last evening. His death is deeply mourned, for deceased was well known and generally liked by everyone. He had been ill about 2 months, but had apparently been slowly recovering; but on Sunday he had a relapse which resulted in his death. About 2 months ago, while riding in a buckboard with a Portuguese, a breaststrap broke, the tongue of the buckboard came down and the team ran away. As there was no way of controlling the horses, Mr. Merrill jumped out and was violently thrown to the ground, receiving internal injuries which resulted fatally. The team ran on until it collided with the Park fence, where the Portuguese was thrown over into the park and was quite severely cut and bruised. Deceased was the son of Mr.& Mrs. C.S. Merrill, of the West Side. He married Miss Annie Shore, of Lemoore, about 1 year and a half ago and leaves his wife and a child about 3 weeks old, besides other relatives and a host of friends, to mourn his untimely end. He was 30 years of age, was born in San Francisco, but had resided in what is now Kings county for 17 years, coming to old Tulare county in 1870. Deceased was a member of Welcome Lodge, F. and A.M. of Lemoore, and of the Foresters and Woodmen Lodges of this city. A post-mortem examination was held this forenoon, to ascertain, if possible, the exact cause of death, as there had been phases of the case which completely baffled the skill of the physicians. The physicians state that Mr. Merrill was fatally injured, by the fall he received, an abscess having formed on his liver, from which death was sure to ensue sooner or later. The funeral will take place tomorrow (Wednesday) forenoon at 11 o'clock from the Christian church, and the remains will be interred in the Grangeville cemetery with Masonic honors. Hanford Journal Hanford, Kings Co., California Tuesday, 23 OCTOBER 1894 LAID AT REST -- Hundreds of Our People Show Respect to the Memory of an Honored Citizen -- The funeral of Strong Merrill, which took place from the Christian church in this city last Wednesday forenoon, was one of the largest demonstrations ever witnessed over the departure of a citizen in this city. The large auditorium of the church was almost filled with mourning relatives and friends and evidences of genuine sorrow were seen on every hand. The altar of the church was beautifully decorated with flowers and in front of it stood a large vase of white calla lilies. The lid of the coffin was covered with floral tributes of mourning friends and relatives. The remains were brought from the residence of deceased by Welcome Lodge, F. & A.M., of Lemoore, who were in regalia, and they were soon followed by the Lemoore Lodge of Independent Order of Foresters, who wore badges. Both lodges turned out nearly full ranks. Rev. Donnell of the Baptist church read portions of the Scriptures, after which Rev. Miller, the new pastor of the M.E. Church, offered a prayer. The funeral address was made by A.G. Park, who recited the virtues of the deceased, and held them up for emulation. He paid the deceased a worthy eulogy as a citizen, a husband and a father, and admonished his hearers to live to aid one another in the journey through life. Several hymns were touchingly sang by a choir of 4 voices, led by Mrs. W.E. Beeson. The remains were taken to the Grangeville cemetery for interment. The funeral procession was one of the largest ever witnessed here, being nearly a mile long. With the impressive rites of the Masonic order the remains of Strong Merrill were laid to rest in the beautiful little cemetery of our neighboring town.
