After the peace celebration in St. Helena Monday afternoon Mr. and Mrs. Mercier and the latter's sister from Sonoma county who was visiting them, decided to drive up to Calistoga and see what was going on in the up-valley town. They made the trip in the Ford auto delivery truck used at the Mercier store, and as there is only one seat Mrs. Mercier sat on the floor of the car. Some time was spent in Calistoga and about 6 o'clock the three started for home. They were filled with the spirit of joyousness over the end of the war and Mrs. Mercier had a horn which, just as they were about to swing out of Lincoln avenue into the county road, she raised to blow in greeting to occupants of a passing machine. As she did so the car swung around the corner and losing her balance Mrs. Mercier fell out of the automobile, her head striking heavily on the concrete pavement. The injured woman was hurried to the Calistoga hospital and Dr. Blodgett was summoned. It was found that Mrs. Mercier's skull had been badly fractured and she never regained consciousness, the end coming at 6 o'clock Tuesday morning. The remains were sent to Napa for preparation for burial and the funeral was held in St. Helena Thursday afternoon at 4 o'clock. Mr. and Mrs. Mercier had been married about two years. Recently they purchased a small farm near St. Helena and were just getting settled. Mr. Mercier spending every spare moment from the store in adding many comforts to his new home. Mrs. Mercier's mother was also visiting the young couple when the sad accident occurred and all the sorrowing relatives have the warm sympathy of the entire community in their bereavement.
