He was born Sept. 11, 1906, in Foxcroft, the son of Perley E. and Ethel (Rowell) Ward. Sumner was a 1925 graduate of Foxcroft Academy, did post graduate work at Higgins Classical Institute and attended the University of Maine at Orono, where he was a member of Phi Kappa Sigma. Ward, 90, husband of the late Faye (Davis) Ward died Jan 15, 1997 at a local nursing home. He was born Sept. 11, 1906, in Foxcroft, the son of Perley E. and Ethel (Rowell) Ward. Sumner was a 1925 graduate of Foxcroft Academy, did post graduate work at Higgins Classical Institute and attended the University of Maine at Orono, where he was a member of Phi Kappa Sigma. Sumner was proud of the University and encouraged his daughters and grandchildren to attend. Mr. Ward was president and Chief Executive Officer of P. E. Ward and Co. until the time his health failed. During his tenure, he acquired Knowles and Dressel's of Skowhegan and opened a branch store in Millinocket. He was also instrumental in building the former Collette's Restaurant in Dover-Foxcroft. He was a charter member for 59 years and a past president of the Dover-Foxcroft Kiwanis Club. Foxcroft Academy was special to Sumner and he was a longtime member of the board of trustees, serving for many years as vice-president. He was chairman of the Building Committee during the construction of the present Academy building. Sumner had also served on the Thompson Free Library Board of Trustees. An avid outdoorsman, he was well known in the area by older folks for his art of story telling. He even had his own radio show at WDME on Saturday mornings, relating his stories of hunting and fishing--with some embellishment. He especially enjoyed working and relaxing at his cottage in Bowerbank. Sumner was predeceased by a daughter, Margaret W. Allen. He is survived by two daughters, Lois W. Reynolds of Dover-Foxcroft and Judith W. Marshall of West Newbury, Mass.; six grandchildren, Gordon Robinson, III, Elaine Stanhope, Bruce and Mark Robinson, Kimberly Mosley and Susan Takesian; 10 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. A celebration of Sumner's life was held Jan. 16, at the Lary Funeral Home, Dover-Foxcroft, with Rev. Roxy Moses officiating. Spring burial will be in the family lot in Dover cemetery.
