Ennis, which occurred at her home near Slocum last Sunday, the town loses a highly respected resident who through a long life certainly "did her bit." Quietly but efficiently she was busy for many years as an expert carpet maker and knitter in elaborate patterns of pieces as large as a counterpane. One of these has long been a treasured article in her homes. It is made in the intricate shell pattern, of 11 thread Dexter cotton, the spread contains 1476 pieces by count. As a maker of rag carpets and rugs her handiwork can be found in many a home in a wide community, especially among members of the Rodman family at Lafayette. Much of the material which she would use in these carpets and braided rugs were remnant goods, purchased for the purpose, colored up by her own hands. She would use eleven strands to six inches wide. As a maker of choice butter she found a ready market at from sixty to seventy-five cents per pound for all the butter she could furnish. This was sold through the old time firm of B. B. H. Sherman & Son of Newport to "that city's four hundred." Mrs. Ennis was for years a weaver with the Rodman Manufacturing Co. She operated the first loom for Robt. Rodman, founder of the business in the first mill he started. It was she who made the cloth which Mr. Rodman sent to the Centennial Exposition at Philadelphia in 1876. Her work was awarded a gold medal. Twenty years ago the failing health of her husband, Nathan A. Ennis, compelled her to leave her loom and give more attention to things of the farm. His death occurred Christmas Eve., 1903. Born in North Kingstown 86 years ago on the Ten Rod Road farm occupied by Gideon Brown. Mrs Ennis was daughter of Rathbun and Esther Northup. In April, 1854, she was married to her late husband by Elder John Tillinghast, to whose church at Stony Lane, both belonged. The marriage certificate, "a mere scrap of paper" upon which the Elder wrote the statement of the marriage has been kept in the house where it may be seen today. Later both Mr and Mrs Ennis were members of the Allenton Baptist Church, and still later helped to organize the Seventh Day Advent Church and erect the building at Slocum. Mrs Ennis was buried from her late home Tuesday, Rev S. B Chapman, conducting the funeral. Clark and Arthur Tisdale, William Brown, and Edwin Henry were the bearers. Burial was in Elm Grove Cemetery. A son, Edwin H Ennis, the only child, has cared for this mother in Israel for many years. The Wickford Standard Wickford Rhode Island Friday, November 16, 1917
