Description	:	Susan Ann (Susanna) Stone married James Croot in Chester, Morris County, NJ on 22 June 1872. The marriage record says that both were 21. This was not true. He was 20 and she was 30. Read More	Susan Ann (Susanna) Stone married James Croot in Chester, Morris County, NJ on 22 June 1872. The marriage record says that both were 21. This was not true. He was 20 and she was 30. Her birth date is variable in the existing record, from 1842 to 1850 although her baptism record shows she was born in 1842. This caused some difficulty in tracking her. In the 1880 Census, she said she was born in 1847. Her husband was 10 years younger and she adjusted her age accordingly. Her birth name was Susan Ann Stone, but she was sometimes listed as Susanna. James Croot immigrated to New Jersey in 1871, traveling with his widowed mother and his brother John Croot and his family. Other siblings were already in the US. Brother Joseph Croot and sister Ann Croot Stone with her husband Philip Stone were already living in Chester, Morris County, NJ. Brother John Croot eventually settled in Far Hills, Somerset Co NJ after living for a while in Hacklebarney, Morris Co NJ, near Chester. Brothers William Smith/Robert Croot and George Croot were in New York City. Brother Samuel Croot had been in New York City and then NJ but moved to in Iowa in 1871. Philip Stone was Susan's older brother, and it appears that she traveled to the US in 1872 to join him. The relationship was unclear at first because the marriage records show her parents as the late Lewis and Margaret Stone. Philip's parents were John Stone and Margaret Rowe. No one has been able to find a Lewis Stone in either the UK or US. This seems to have been a transcription error. Her parents were identified by her baptism record, her siblings' baptism records, and a pattern of association with her siblings. Her parents, John Stone b. c.1812 - aft 1846 and Margaret Rowe 1812 - aft 1851, married in Gidleigh, Devon, England 1 Dec 1831. He was a farm worker. In the 1841 Census they were in Gidleigh with three children: John b.1835, Philip b.1836, and Jane b.1838. The birth year for both parents in the census was 1816, but they were unlikely to have married at 15. Further, there are 1812 baptism records for Margaret Rowe and her sister Agness in nearby Chagford. Agness Rowe was a witness at John and Margaret's wedding. Later Philip Stone lived with Agness and her husband. There is a 10 July 1842 baptism record for Susan Ann Stone in Gidleigh. Parents were John and Margaret Stone. Records show that there was another son, Methuselah, born after her who lived to adulthood. Civil Registration record shows that his parents were John Stone and Margaret Rowe. Methuselah was with Susan in 1851. He immigrated to the US in 1870 and ended up in Wilkes-Barre, PA . The parish register of the Holy Trinity Church in Gidleigh and civil registration shows these children born to John and Margaret Stone: Margaret Jane #1, bap 10 June 1832, died before 1838 when the name was reused John, bap 15 June 1835, seemingly died young after 1841 Philip, bap 5 Jun 1836, died 1924 (Margaret) Jane #2, bap 25 Mar 1838, living 1851 Elizabeth 1840-1843 (civic registration of birth and death) Susan Ann, bap 10 July 1842, died Iowa 1897 William Henry, bap 12 Jan 1845, died 15 Sept 1849, Union Workhouse, Okehampton Methuselah, b. 1 Oct 1846, no bap record, civil registration only, died 1907 in PA Father John Stone vanished from the record after early 1846 when youngest child Methuselah was conceived. There are two death records (1841 and 1844) for two John Stones in Okehampton but neither was for her father or her brother. There is a record of a John Stone, b. 1812, being jailed for larceny in 1846, but it is not known if that was him. It may be significant that his wife registered the birth of Methuselah in October 1846. What happened to John Stone is unclear but the consequences of his absence are clear: the family was in the Union Workhouse, Okehampton, before 1849 as paupers. The record shows that in the 1851 census Susan and Methuselah were there and that William "Henry" had died there in 1849. Sister Margaret "Jane" left the Workhouse in 1850 to work for the Endacott family in Gidleigh; she is found with them in 1851 as a servant. A Margaret Stone left the Workhouse with two sets of clothing in 1851 and, shortly afterward, a Margaret Stone, b.1811 in Chagford, is in the 1851 census as a servant at Sandford Farm in North Tawton. This was likely the children's mother. (Research into Workhouse records continues.) Eldest brother Phillip Stone was living in Chagford in 1851 with Margaret's twin sister Agness and her husband as an apprentice carpenter. No trace of her mother Margaret or sister Margaret "Jane" have been found after the 1851 Census. Perhaps they married and changed their names. In the 1861 Census, Susan Ann Stone, born in Gidleigh in 1843, was working as a servant in the household of Richard Carnall in Dunsford, Devon. In the 1871 Census, Susanna Stone, born in Gidleigh in 1844, was working as a servant at the Royal Albert Orphan Asylum, in Surrey. It is unknown how or when she moved there. There is a family story that she had been a nanny in the household of the Prince of Wales that has been discounted as highly unlikely. However, it may be that her time at the Royal Albert was the basis of the story. Queen Victoria visited in 1867 so Susan may have seen her. * A Susan A. Stone immigrated to the US in April 1872 landing in Boston. This may or may not have been her but it seems likely. We know she was in England when the 1871 Census was taken and in New Jersey when she married James Croot in 1872. In spite of the family connection--James' sister was married to Susan's brother--they could not have known each other well. In 1871 she was in Surrey and he was in Mortonhamptead, Devon. Maybe they met earlier. They were in Butler County, Iowa by 1878 when their eldest daughter was born. James' brother Samuel Croot already settled here c.1871. James and Samuel were farmers. They had two daughters who lived to adulthood: Alice Jane in 1878 and Theresa Mae in 1885. An infant son died in 1881. There is a family story that others died of smallpox as children. She died in 1897 as a farmer's wife. * Part of the family story that Susan had been a royal nanny was that James Croot had been a Navy captain. This is unlikely. James was 19 when he immigrated. In the 1871 Census he was a teenage farm worker at Lowton Farm near Mortonhamptead, Devon. Likely previous to his father's 1869 death, he would have worked on his father's farm where he is found as a boy in the 1861 Census. There is no record of him having been in the Navy and in any event he was much too young to have been so senior. Instead he was a farmer worker in Devon and a farmer in Iowa and then in Wisconsin after his second marriage in 1900. He is listed in the 1880 and 1900 Censuses in Iowa as a farmer and in 1895 owned 160 acres in Washington Twp, Butler County, IA. His brother Samuel Croot owned 180 acres nearby. In the 1910 and 1920 Censuses he is listed as a farmer in Wisconsin with a "truck farm."
