Description	:	Mrs. Susan Vrieze, age 88, of Alton, passed away on Monday, April 28, 2008, at the Orange City Area Health System Long Term Care Facility. There will be a funeral service on Friday, May 2, at 1:30pm, at the Alton Reformed Church in Alton. The Revs. Michael and Elizabeth Hardeman will officiate. Interment will follow at the Nassau Township Cemetery, near Alton. Visitation will be after 3:00pm on Thursday, with the family present from 6:00pm to 7:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City. Susan was born on June 16, 1919, in rural Sioux Center, the daughter of Henry and Hattie (Vander Kooi) De Weerd. She was raised at Sioux Center, where she graduated from high school. She then moved to Orange City, where she was employed at the Kalsbeek Cash and Carry Store. On September 17, 1948, she married John William Vrieze in Orange City. They made their home in Alton, where she was a homemaker and a clerk at Homan's Grocery Store. In later years, they managed the Alton Laundromat. She was also a nurses' aide at the Heritage House Nursing Home in Orange City and a housekeeper in private homes in Alton and Orange City. In November of 2001, Sue and John became residents of the Pioneer Memorial Home in Orange City. In May of 2004, they transferred to the Long Term Care Facility. Mrs. Vrieze was a member of the Alton Reformed Church, where she participated in the women's organizations. She was also a voter registration volunteer. She enjoyed reading, crocheting, cooking, and entertaining, and was blessed with the gift of hospitality. She will be greatly missed by her family, who include her husband of almost sixty years; a daughter and her husband, Jolene and Kenneth Ekema, of Everson, Washington; three grandchildren, Kristin, and her husband, Linsey Hoekstra; Kyle Ekema, and his fiancé, Swandel Dykstra; and Kaitlyn Ekema, all of Everson; a great-granddaughter, Jessica Hoekstra; a sister, Christina De Haan, of Orange City; and nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Alice Hulstein, and another Christina in infancy; and two brothers, Tony and Fred De Weerd.
