A graveside service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, April 19, 2021 at Linwood Park Cemetery. Susan was born in Ames, February 28, 1945, the daughter of a glass retailer, S. John Elbert and Dorothy Goosman Elbert, one of the earliest female pilots in Story County. She graduated from Ames High School in 1963 and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in education from Iowa State University in 1967. She married pharmacist Dewey Brown on August 25, 1965. The couple lived in Ames for several years and Susan taught pre-school at Gilbert until their son Travis was born in 1972, followed by daughter Renee in 1976. Susan resumed teaching in Boone schools in the mid-1980s, specializing in behavior disabilities, and she continued until retirement in 2010. Growing up, Susan's cheery personality and helpful hands made her a favorite among her younger cousins and prepared her for her ultimate occupation, grandmother. She was also a pretty good golfer and played twice a week in Boone with a group called the "Golfing Grannies." Susan was an active member in Boone's Augustana Lutheran Church for many years. She was also an active member in many organizations including a retiree chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, the professional educators' sorority, and National TTT Society, another professional women's group. Susan was a long-time participant and supporter of the Festival of Hope organization with Boone Community Schools for the benefit of school children. In addition to husband Dewey, Susan is survived by son Travis (Amy) Brown of Sioux Falls, SD, and grandchildren Tanner, Megan and Cody; and by daughter Renee (Ryan) Gibson of Kansas City, MO, and granddaughters Katie and Claire; brother, Mike (Suretta) Elbert of Minnetonka, MN; and many Elbert and Goosman cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents and younger brother Jim. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Schroeder-Reimers Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall Streets in Boone. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to the Augustana Lutheran Church or the Boone Hope Foundation.
