A largely unexplored type of bound labor involved children whose parents were deceased or were unable or unwilling to raise them. The process of arranging for care of these children as orphan apprenticeship since the children were often called orphans even if one parent survived. Before the development of orphanages during the middle of the nineteenth century, abandoned children became the responsibility of the local government, which typically sought to place the child with a master or mistress who would care for him or her. The exchange of child labor for cash or in-kind payments among the officials charged with finding a new home for the child, the master, and the child was a complex arrangement. As in other settings for the hire of bound labor, the child's expected productivity influenced terms of the indenture contract.
