Mrs. Sue Frances Whitney Fendley, 84, of 3809 Whitmire Highway, Union, died Saturday, Dec. 27, 2003, at Wallace Thomson Hospital after an extended illness.
A native of Union County, she was the wife of Furman Lester Fendley and was the only daughter of the late Fred H. and Lois Tinsley Whitney. She was a member of Hebron Baptist Church, where she served in many capacities. She graduated from Anderson Junior College and received an AB Degree in sociology from Winthrop University. Mrs. Sue Frances Whitney Fendley, 84, of 3809 Whitmire Highway, Union, died Saturday, Dec. 27, 2003, at Wallace Thomson Hospital after an extended illness.
A native of Union County, she was the wife of Furman Lester Fendley and was the only daughter of the late Fred H. and Lois Tinsley Whitney. She was a member of Hebron Baptist Church, where she served in many capacities. She graduated from Anderson Junior College and received an AB Degree in sociology from Winthrop University. She taught school in Seneca, S.C., and Fayetteville, N.C., before moving home to Union, where she taught for more than 25 years. She was a great conservationist.
She served as past president of the Union County Conservation Auxiliary and was named "The Outstanding Conservation District Auxiliary Member in the Nation", which is the highest award given to the auxiliary. After retirement, she traveled extensively as a member of the Ladies Auxiliary Conservation Districts, including a 30-day excursion to China, where she studied the conservation practices of China.
Surviving, in addition to her husband, are two nephews of Union, William English Whitney Jr. and James F.B.Whitney; five great-nieces; and two great-nephews.
Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2003, at Hebron Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. David Toney and the Rev. Jerry Ford. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be William English Whitney Jr., James F.B. Whitney, Johnny Harris, Douglas Fendley, James Brown and C.B. Jolly. Members of the Bertha Gregory Sunday School Class of Hebron Baptist Church are asked to sit in a group.
The body will remain at the funeral home and will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Tuesday to await the hour of service. The family is at the home, 3809 Whitmire Highway, Union, and will receive friends at the church Tuesday immediately following the funeral service.
