Description	:	Susan [or Susanna] Ralston was the daughter of John Ralston Jr and Nancy Agnes McLane. Susan's birth date varies from 1835 to 1840. She first appears as age 10 with parents in 1850 Butler Co, PA census and most census records indicate birth year between 1838 and 1840. Read More	Susan [or Susanna] Ralston was the daughter of John Ralston Jr and Nancy Agnes McLane. Susan's birth date varies from 1835 to 1840. She first appears as age 10 with parents in 1850 Butler Co, PA census and most census records indicate birth year between 1838 and 1840. Her death certificate shows 15 Nov 1835 as birth date [Informant on that record was her son, Orlando/Ilander Shirley. Susan married Daniel B Shirley about 1855 and they were the parents of at least three known children: Orlando [or Ilander] Shirley, Francis M Shirley and William Nelson Shirley. In 1860 they resided in Brandon, Jackson, Iowa with two sons, Orlando age 4 and 'Boy' [Roy?] age 2. [Boy is believed to be son, Francis M Shirley]. Son, William Nelson Shirley, was born in March 1863 to Daniel and Susan. Daniel and Susan divorced in the 1860s and by 1870 Susan is assumed to be the Susan 'Ralston', age 30, domestic servant for Hotel Keeper E F Clark, in Anamosa, Jones, Iowa. Her sons, Orlando and William Shirley reside with grandparents, John and Nancy Ralston in 1870 Brandon, Jackson, Iowa and son, Francis 'Frank' Shirley, resides with grandparents [?], Daniel and Ann Shirley, also in Brandon, Jackson, Iowa. [Susan's husband, Daniel Shirley Jr is remarried and lives next door to his parents.] When Susan's father, John Ralston, died in 1873 his Jackson Co IA probate records lists Susan's address as Sutton, Clay County, Nebraska. In 1885 Ainsworth, Brown, Nebraska there is a Susan 'Ralston' age 49, born in PA, servant, who boards with James and Sarah Burns [hotel keeper]. It is believed that Susan is also the Susan 'Shirley' found in 1900 and 1910 Julesburg, Sedgwick County, Colorado. In 1900 she indicated she was born in Nov 1838 in PA and was the mother of 5 children, 3 survive and runs a lodging house. In 1910 she was age 73 and a 'wash woman.' Susan Shirley's 30 Nov 1913 Iowa death certificate shows she was daughter of John Ralston and 'Garner' [?] both born in Pennsylvania. Infromant: I Shirley [Orlando/Ilander] residing in Delhi, Iowa. Burial noted in Hickory Grove Cemetery on 1 Jun 1913.
