Description	:	Susanna(h) was the eldest child of James Godwin and Amelia "Milly" Rhodes Godwin, both of whom died young. Obituary: DAVENPORT - Near Columbia, Tyrrell County, Susannah Davenport, aged 65 years, 8 months and 16 days. Sister Davenport has, for nearly fifteen years, been a great sufferer but being a woman of great energy and industry never succumbed to the destroyer until something over two years ago. Obituary: DAVENPORT - Near Columbia, Tyrrell County, Susannah Davenport, aged 65 years, 8 months and 16 days. Sister Davenport has, for nearly fifteen years, been a great sufferer but being a woman of great energy and industry never succumbed to the destroyer until something over two years ago. May 27th, 1883 her companion was taken away, she being confined to her bed. On the 4th day of July 1883 the writer received her into the Methodist E. church, South, at Columbia on profession of faith and visited her at intervals from that time till her death which took place Aug. 6th, 1884. At no time during her great bodily sufferings did a murmur or complaint against her heavenly Father fall from her lips. She was a patient sufferer and expressed herself as not fearing to die, but still hopeful of recovery. She was a most excellent woman, and one who ruled her household well, possessed of fine business tact, an excellent manager and endued with an unusual amount of good sense, she was enabled to avoid the unnecessary cares and worries of daily life, and thereby, no doubt, prolonged a life precious in the sight of her family. Her last words were "My son, do good," spoken to her eldest son who was nearest to her, and then she "went to sleep," ending a life of labor and suffering here, to enter, we trust, into a life where there shall "no wave of trouble roll across her peaceful breast." Sister Davenport had a remarkably striking face, and her head was crowned with waves of silvered hair, the face was far more attractive, even in age, than many younger and fairer. There was to this writer an indescribable charm over which he has often pondered and sometimes wondered. It must have been the reflex of something high and lofty within the soul. She was a true woman, therefore a good wife and mother, and a true friend. May God make her death a blessing to her surviving children, and thereby draw them towards the "home over there" where "many dear to their hearts are watching and waiting" to greet them on the "golden shore" of the "silver river."
