Read More	Courtesy of: Cyndi Speltz Gipp OBITUARY OF MRS. SUSAN THIELEN Mrs. Susan Thielen, died at the home of her son, Dr. M. H. Thielen, Thursday, March 7, 1901, at the age of seventy-seven years, six months and thirteen days. Susan Hargarten was born August 24,1823, at Linebach, Kreis Pruem, Trier, Germany, where she grew to womanhood and in the year of 1847 was united in marriage to Mr. William Thielen. To them were born eight children, four boys and four girls, one of whom died in infancy, and another died in later years. In 1876 death claimed the husband and father, and the widow came with her children to America, two sons having come to this country some time before. They settled in Waterloo, Iowa, and resided there about four years, moving from Exira, Iowa. Deceased resided in Audubon county ten years and then went to Kansas, where she made her home until about two years ago when she came to spend the remainder of her life with her youngest child, and Dr. and Mrs. Thielen did all that was possible to add to her pleasure and comfort during her stay with them. The six surviving children are Barney Thielen of Canute, Kansas; Mrs. Anna Bastendorf of Templeton, Iowa, Wm. Thielen of Exira, Iowa; Mrs. Marian Hochstatter of Templeton, Iowa, Bernard Thielen of Chanute, Kansas, and Dr. M. H. Thielen of Grundy Center. Two other relatives, a granddaughter, Miss Mary Hochstatter, and a nephew, Mr. Wm. Hargarten, also reside in Grundy Center and together with several grandchildren mourn the departure of the deceased. Although Mrs. Thielen had not been in good health for some time those with whom she was associated did not consider her condition serious and she was confined to her bed only a few days. On Thursday afternoon she passed quietly and peacefully away happy in the faith of the Catholic church of which she had been devoted and consistent member. Brief funeral services were held at the home Saturday afternoon, after which the remains were conveyed to Chanute, Kansas, accompanied by Dr. Thielen and Mrs. Bastendorf. On Monday funeral services were held at the Catholic church in Chanute and interment took place beside loved ones of the deceased in the cemetery there. To the friends and neighbors who kindly assisted them during the last illness and following the death of their beloved mother, Dr. and Mrs. Thielen feel very thankful and extend their gratitude to all for their sympathy and kindness.
