Read More	The Hooper Sentinel April 7, 1927 Final Summons Come to Mrs. Edward Fleishhauer For the second time within a week, Hooper and its vicinity has been called upon to mourn the passing of one of its esteemed and beloved pioneer women. The first was the death on Saturday of Mrs. Theo. Uehling. This was followed on Tuesday, April 5, by the passing away of Mrs. Edward Fleishhauer at about 10 o'clock that morning at the home of her nephew, W. M. Kusel, of this city. Her death was due to a complication of ailments incident to old age, she having reached the age of 84 years and 12 days. Her illness dates back to last November when she was afflicted with a light paralytic stroke from which she recovered. However other ailments set in, and with the exception of about a week, she had been bedfast since then. Last Friday her condition became very critical, and from then until Tuesday her sufferings were great, a merciful death at last coming to relieve her of her sufferings. Miss Susana Heller was born on February 23, 1843, at Hesse, Germany, and as a young girl came to the states the first home being near Richmond, Wisconsin. On May 16, 1864, she was united in marriage to Edward Fleishhauer at Watertown, Wisconsin, and immediately, they with about twelve families started overland with ox team for the new home in Nebraska, the trip to the west requiring five weeks of travel. On arrival here they settled on a homestead, five miles northeast of the present site of Hooper which she still owns. On this place they lived until 1885 when they retired from active farm life and moved to Hooper, and since then this place had continued her home. Mr. Fleishhauer passed away in 1915. With 63 years of residence in this locality, Mrs. Fleishhauer was indeed one of the real pioneer residents of this community. Coming here as she did in those early days, she suffered along with the other pioneers the trials and tribulations of those days, but with a perseverance characteristic of the first settlers she went thru it all with much fortitude, and finally was rewarded with seeing this section of the country turn out to be the prosperous one it is today. As a long time resident here, Mrs. Fleishhauer became widely known among our people, and by her friendly and helpful nature to friends and neighbors became much beloved by all friends, and her passing is grieved by such. Her close surviving relatives are two brothers, August J. and William Heller of Hooper, and one sister, Mrs. August Kusel of Watertown, Wisconsin. The funeral of this highly estimable woman will be held this Thursday afternoon with short services at 1:30 at the W. M. Kusel home and at two o'clock from the Zions Lutheran church of which she was a member, Rev. Duhrkop conducting them. She came to America with her parents in 1858. They located in New York for a short time. In 1859 they removed to Watertown, Wis., where May 16, 1864 she was married to Edward Fleishhauer. The same year they started overland by the ox team route with a number of other families for their farm four miles northeast of here that Mr. Fleishhauer had previously homesteaded. They came into our little city to reside in 1885 and have since made this their home.
