Susanna 4 (45) Dickey (Robert3, Samuel2, William1) was born Jan 4, 1789. The earlier part of her adult life was devoted to teaching in which she excelled. She was universally beloved for her genial manners and the overflowing generosity of her nature. She married, March 25, 1817, John White, who was born in Londonderry July 16, 1787, son of Ephraim and Esther (Moore) White. After marriage they settled in Litchfield, NH, on the estate previously occupied by Wyseman Claggett, who had formerly been the kind’s attorney located at Portsmouth, NH, and noted far and wide for his eccentric and arbitrary acts. To say that she was a helpmeet in the broadest sense of that term but feebly tells the story of her faithfulness, unflagging industry and never-failing kindness. Of energy she had abundant store, and she expended it unstintedly. She gave herself unreservedly to her family, yet her beneficent offices were not limited to kith and kin. The positive convictions of Mr White, his strong impulses and bold expression of sentiment were characteristics inherited from his ancestors, who were directly descended from John White of western England. These strong English traits enabled him to exert a commanding influence over his fellow citizens. During the later and more active part of his life he was an unswerving Democrat, and so thoroughly versed was he in his political creed that to those of his own party affiliations his opinions were oracular and decisive. As a citizen he was respected. He was the pioneer in lumbering operations in Litchfield, and amassed no inconsiderable fortune in this business, ultimately becoming the largest accumulator of property in a wealthy town. He often served as one of the Selectmen. He was a close reader of the literature of the day, conversant with the vital questions of the hour, and remarkably well versed in history, although it was his boast that he attended school but six weeks in a year. He was first lieutenant of a military company from Londonderry stationed at Portsmouth in the War of 1812, where he served several months. He died April 18, 1860; she died Feb 9, 1867.
