Read More	Published in the Piscataquis (ME) Observer 15 Dec 1859 p3: "DIED---'A MOTHER IN ISRAEL' GONE---In Monson, on the 30th ult., at the house of her son-in-law, A. G. Houston, Esq., Widow Susannah Witherell, relict of the late Charles Witherell, of Norridgewock, aged 83 years. Her remains were taken to Norridgewock for interment the night of the 1st inst. after very appropriate services by Eld. D. P. Bailey, of Monson. Mrs. Witherell was the daughter of Rev. Ezekiel Emerson, about one of the first Missionaries in Maine. She early became pious and united with the Congregational Church, which was then under the pastoral care of the Rev. Jotham Sewall, more than fifty years ago. Mrs. Witherell possessed those traits of character, which fitted her to exert a saving influence in every circle in which she moved, and present such an example of christian virtues as might be safely held up for imitation to those who succeed her. That character has been tried by the tests of many earthly afflictions and the common temptations of the world, and was not found wanting even to the last. No doubt can rest upon the minds of those who knew her best, of the genuineness of her christian professions. Her doctrinal views were clear and immovably fixed. She knew what she believed and why she believed. As a student of the Bible she drank in its truths with a full conviction of their value and importance---what God had taught in his word she never called in question. Such a firmness of belief saved her from faltering in her course, and inspired cheerfulness and activity in all the religious, as well as common duties of life. She was eminently catholic in her spirit towards others who might differ in essential points---her decision was without bigotry.---She could enjoy the society of others, who gave evidence of possessing the true christian fellowship without prejudice or controversy. Consistency with her own sentiments naturally led her to appreciate the same consistency in others with their p___ views. She loved to read---though the Bible was her chief resort for education---she found a pure pleasure in such books as would furnish sound knowledge, and at the same time encouragement of a devotional spirit. Although advanced in years, she belonged, while she lived to the present age---and in all the events actually taking place she evinced all the interest of a youthful actor upon the stage and her piety and intelligence strengthened her to maintain in a good degree a victory over the infirmities of age. She loved for this reason, her weekly religious paper, as bringing refreshing messages of the works of God in different and distant places. She loved the worship of God---trifling excuses would not detain her from the house of God. The sanctuary was her home---her mind, when there, was intent upon the great object. When she spoke of the possibility of her recovery from her last sickness, she spoke of the pleasure she might enjoy of again visiting the sanctuary. We may well indulge the cheering hope, that she who enjoyed the service of God on earth with such a pleasure, is now mingling with the pure worshippers above, and there finds a more congenial sphere for her holy aspirations."
