Description	:	I. Parents The identity of Susanna Lockhart's parent remains elusive. Some trees on Ancestry.com give a William Lockhart and wife Elizabeth Fletcher. A Family Data Collection tree shows a Susan Sukey Lockhart born to this couple in 1817 in North Carolina. One problem with this possibility is that on Susanna's one census we have for her, she gives her place of birth as Indiana. Another problem is that that Census shows Susanna, not Susan, as her name. One problem with this possibility is that on Susanna's one census we have for her, she gives her place of birth as Indiana. Another problem is that that Census shows Susanna, not Susan, as her name. Her gravestone uses "Susanna". Only the Indiana Select Marriages shows "Susan." In the Centennial History of Washington Co., IN, she is called "Susannah", not "Susan". The text on page 757 is "Polly Ann Hatfield was a native of Howard township and the daughter of John N. and Susannah (Lockhart) Hatfield, pioneer settlers of the county." Now calling them pioneer settlers implies they came to Washington County from elsewhere, whether from another part of Indiana or from another state. But Susanna and John Hatfield were married in Indiana in 1836 and he gives Indiana as his place of birth. Now if Susanna's parents were the settlers, that makes sense. The Hatfield bible gives 15 Sept 1813 as her date of birth. These bible pages have some small inaccuracies and I do not know when and by whom the entry was made. It is not a contemporaneous entry, but one made after her death. The date may simply be calculated based on her gravestone and her date of death and age at death. "Susanna, wife of John Hatfield, died April 9, 1852 aged 38 years 6 mo. 24 da." per Archeological and Historical Survey of Indiana, Wash. Co. (handwritten). [Note: this Find a Grave originally gave date of death as 16 May 1871, which does not sound right since John Hatfield remarried in 1862. I am removing that date.] While we have no record to show who Susanna Lockhart's parents are, it is not inconceivable that her parents were indeed William Lockhart and Elizabeth Fletcher mentioned above. The Find a Grave Memorials for them show that they were members of the Mill Creek Church of Christ, and, in fact, their son, James was a Deacon. We do not have a birth date for Elizabeth, but she would have likely been in her very early 40s when she had Susanna, if indeed she is her mother. Other children include a Thomas, Joseph and Sarah (Sally), born 1802, who married James Collier. There is a 1820 and 1810 Census for a William Lockhart (11 people and 4 people in the family, respectively) in Washington County that would fit William and Elizabeth Fletcher Lockhart. There was a William Lockhart in Clark Co., IN in 1810, but he appeared to stay in Clark Co. in 1820, 1830 and 1840. There is also a different William Lockhart in 1820 in Southeast, Orange, IN with 9 in the family. Lastly, there is a Walter Lockhart in 1820 in Washington Co. with 5 in family, and he was in the age bracket of 26 -44. Frankly, he cannot be ruled out. Additionally, although less likely candidates, a good number of Lockharts could be found in Gibson township, Washington County around this time. In conclusion, I do not feel adequate records exist to name Susanna's parents. However, the most likely candidates are William and Elizabeth Fletcher Lockhart from Virginia who were members of the Mill Creek Church of Christ. by Linda Standish April 4, 2015
