Description	:	"Susannah DOWNING died at the residence of her son in Salt Creek township, May 8th, 1891, aged ninety years, one month and twenty-six days. She was born in Pennsylvania, March 12th, 1801, but emigrated to Ohio while the latter state was still new. From there she moved to the then sparsely settled region of Indiana, and finally, in 1848 [1846], came to Iowa, being then thoroughly experienced in the hardships of frontier life. Mother DOWNING joined the Baptist church more than fifty years ago, and lived through all this period a consistent, Christian life- Kind and patient in spirit, and gentle in manner, she had, perhaps, not an enemy in the world. The funeral services were conducted by the writer in the presence of a large number of her friends and neighbors who came to pay their last tribute of respect to one who had so long been known and honored among them. / Mother DOWNING has left to us a rare example of the well-rounded life, having come peacefully to her grave at a full age, and has been gathered, like a shock of corn fully ripe, into the heavenly garner. Looking upon such bright examples, we may well say, 'Let me die the death of the righteous and let my last end be like theirs M. M. Boyer." Susannah Wilkinson married Jeremiah John [or John Jeremiah] Downing on 1 January 1832 in Fountain co., Indiana. He was b. abt. 1797 in Pennsylvania and d. 23 June 1837 in Fountain co., Indiana.
