Description	:	Birth Date on Headstone as 1858 is incorrect. She is not listed in 1860 Census and her brother Sylvanus Walton "Sylmon" Phelps was born in 1858 and they are not twins. Symbols on grave have one theme- Flowers and rebirth. Flowers, as a group, were used heavily throughout the bible as a metaphor for man's brief lifespan and as a symbol of Christ. Oak leaves can represent mean strength, endurance, eternity, honor, liberty, hospitality, faith, and virtue. A fern can mean sincerity. Closed flower buds, regardless of flower type, mean a life cut too short. A poppy is (immortality, rest, spirituality) or a lotus (creation and rebirth). Lotus flowers are also an Egyptian symbol of purity, resurrection, evolution, potential- all of these because the lotus closes at night and sinks underwater to emerge and bloom again in the morning. The top.... looks like a Calla Lilly - representing beauty. The flower would be keeping with the theme. However, there is ivy surrounding it and ivy (immortality, faithfulness, friendship) is often associated with a flame (symbolizing life and breath). Backside is a potted plant, certainly could be a lotus.
