The son of Solomon and Margaret Burns, he was born June 18, 1846, in Mercer county, Pennsylvania, the third child of a family of twelve children. He spent his early boyhood in that state and came west in the fall of 1863 to Appanoose county, Iowa, where he lived two years before coming to Linn county in 1865 where he has since resided. After coming here he was in the railroad service but in 1880 he took to farming and followed that vocation until 1920 when he moved to Marion. He was married to Anna Fallen, March 29, 1882, and to them were born three children. Charles D. Burns of Marion, Mrs. Ellis of Cedar Rapids, and Mrs. Ralph Parks of near Marion. Mrs. Burns died Dec. 2, 1923, and since her death Mr. Burns has made his home with his daughter in Cedar Rapids. He had been an active worker in the Methodist church since joining in 1873. Besides his children, he is survived by two brothers, W.N. Burns and George Burns of Marion, and four sisters, Mrs. J.P. Bunting, Mrs. George Knight, Mrs. W.R. Alexander, all of Marion, and Mrs. Aaron Taylor of Vinton; and four grandchildren, Grant and Brice Ellice [sic] of Cedar Rapids and Ellen Faye and Lowell Parks of near Marion. Funeral services were held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Yocom chapel, the Rev. C.D. Hull officiating. Interment was made in Oak Shade cemetery.
