Schwartz, 49, a farmer near New Hamburg and Sylvester Goetz, 14 years old, the son of a neighbor, here drowned late Saturday afternoon in the Little River Diversion Channel six miles south of Cape Girardeau, while fishing. Mr. Schwartz lost his life in an attempt to save the youth, who had stepped into deep water while wading near the middle of the channel. Frank Bucher, also of near New Hamburg was saved from a similar death when Albert Goetz, father of the drowned youth, shoved a pole to him, the floundering man grasped it and was pulled to safety. NONE COULD SWIM Neither of the two victims nor any of the members of the party could swim. The result was that when the Goetz youth stepped from a shallow place into 15 feet of water and when Mr. Schwartz went to his rescue, both lost their lives. The bodies were recovered an hour later, Floyd Price, of Dutchtown, dived and recovered Schwartz's body and George Oberman, also of Dutchtown recovered the youth's body in a similar manner. County Coroner J. A. Moore was called and after questioning members of the party held, without calling a jury, that the man and boy came to their deaths by accidental drowning. WADING IN DITCH Members of fishing party included Mr. & Mrs. Alphonse Schwartz, Albert Goetz, and his son, Sylvester, Jr., Mr. & Mrs. Frank Bucher and son, Frank, Jr. and Misses Anna and Helen Simpher, all of near New Hamburg. The men were wading in the channel and apparently were not aware of the sharp declivity of the bed of the stream when young Goetz stepped into it. They had been in the water about 25 minutes, members of the party said, when the tragedy occurred. When young Goetz stepped into deep water at a point about three-fourths of a mile north of the bridge over Hiway 25, Schwartz, who was nearest to him, started after him and then went himself. Frank Bucher, Jr. also disregarded his own inability to swim, went to the aid of his two companions. He succeeded in breaking loose after they grabbed him and then grasped a pole extended by Albert Goetz, father of the youth who drowned. Mr. Goetz ran to Dutchtown for help and the bodies were recovered by two Dutchtown men. Both victims had been dead about an hour when their bodies were recovered. The drowning was witnessed by other members of the party. The Goetz youth, it is said, came up three times and Mr. Schwartz, five times.
