The remains were brought here Tuesday and interred in Highland Cemetery. Our citizens were horrified Sunday evening when a message was received from Hilton containing the sad news that Ves Beedle had been struck and killed by a train that evening. Mr. Beedle was sitting on the track a short distance from Hilton about 8:20 o'clock Sunday evening, it was prevented from seeing the train on account of a sharp curve in the track. This also prevented the engineer from seeing him until it was too late to stop the train. The first warning Mr. Beedle had of the approaching danger was when the engine appeared, coming around the curve at the rate of 30 miles an hour. He was unable to make his escape and the pilot of the engine struck him, throwing him 20 or 30 feet from the track. The train was immediately stopped and the crew picked up the injured man, who was passed medical aid and died in about 30 minutes without regaining consciousness. Sylvester L. Beedle was born south of town, in Monroe County, May 26, 1851. He has resided here and in this community his entire life. He was united in marriage to Miss Catherine Burton at Oskaloosa, January 17, 1876. To this union for children were born, three of whom; Mrs. Charles Harper and Mrs. Fred Wilcox, of this place, Miss Jeanette of Hilton, with the bereaved widow survived him. His other surviving relatives are his sisters, Mrs. John M. Ryan and Miss Nola Johnson, of Eddyville and brother Benjamin Johnson of . He died July 27, 1902, aged 51 years 2 months and one day. The remains were brought here Tuesday and the funeral services were held from the home of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Wilcox at 2:30 PM and internment was made in Highland Cemetery, elder Ross officiating. The U.M.W. of A. Had charge of the services and a large delegation from the surrounding mining towns were present. Ves Beedle, as he was popularly known, was a generous, goodhearted man of a sociable and gentle disposition that made friends of all with whom he came in contact. His sad and untimely death causes the most sincere regret throughout the entire community, and the family have the sympathy of all in their in their irreparable loss.
