Description	:	This story of his life is fascinating. He is said to have been born in/near Haysville, PA., in 1843. Circa 1848, his family had moved to Rock County, Wisconsin. The rumor is that his parents were Layton Palmer, and Ruth Lamphier. It is said that they were part of a Sabbatarian migration from PA to WI. The 1850 Census, shows... Read More	This story of his life is fascinating. He is said to have been born in/near Haysville, PA., in 1843. Circa 1848, his family had moved to Rock County, Wisconsin. The rumor is that his parents were Layton Palmer, and Ruth Lamphier. It is said that they were part of a Sabbatarian migration from PA to WI. Very shortly after arriving in Rock County, Wisc., Sylvester's father died, then shortly after, his mother also was deceased. That left him an orphan in a strange new part of the country. The 1850 Census, shows Sylvester living with the "Parker Rowley Family", and they were also known to have been Sabbatarians, having moved from PA to WI as well. We cannot find Sylvester in the 1860 Census, but he was surely in Wisconsin, as he enlisted to fight for the Union with the 3rd Wisconsin Light Artillery during the early 1860's. He was captured at the Battle of Chickamauge, and spent 18 months in Southern Prisons, he barely survived. After the war, he surprisingly showed up in Clayton County, Iowa. How or why he ended up there is a mystery. The 1870 Census in Clayton County, Iowa, Shows him married with two little kids . The 1900 census in Kansas Shows he has been married 33 yrs. He eventually moved to Kansas circa 1877. to raise his growing family. He had a daughter named Helen Adelia Palmer born 1882, who married a George Hutchison. they are found in Enid OK, 1940 census. She never was shown on a Federal Census with this family. She was born after the 1880 Census and gone before the 1900 Census. F He is known to have had a sister, Adelia. She was born circe 1840, and spent her life in Rock County, WI. She married two Marryott Brothers. We havent' been able to locate her on the 1850 Census anywhere, but she was surely in Rock County, WI. She mentioned a brother, Sylvester Palmer in her obituary. So, they clearly had a relationship. Sylvester was shown on a Roster List as a member of the Kanas GAR, Medicine Post #136, located at Raceburg, Rooks County, KS. on June 30, 1897. This explains the GAR medallion on his tombstone.
