Description	:	Winterset Madisonian April 19, 1922 Sylvester Newton Travis was born Oct. 31, 1847 at Dayton, Armstrong county, Pa. He was the eldest child of Martin B. and Lavina C. Travis. He came with his parents in Nov. 1855 to Winterset. In June, 1870, he located in Peru and engaged in his chosen profession, blacksmithing. On March 12, 1871 he was married to Miss Mary E. Hillman of Peru, and they made that place their home until September 1901; then moved to their farm south of Peru, where he resided until his death. He was taken sick in November, 1921 and... Read More	Winterset Madisonian April 19, 1922 Sylvester Newton Travis was born Oct. 31, 1847 at Dayton, Armstrong county, Pa. He was the eldest child of Martin B. and Lavina C. Travis. He came with his parents in Nov. 1855 to Winterset. In June, 1870, he located in Peru and engaged in his chosen profession, blacksmithing. On March 12, 1871 he was married to Miss Mary E. Hillman of Peru, and they made that place their home until September 1901; then moved to their farm south of Peru, where he resided until his death. He was taken sick in November, 1921 and was a great sufferer until April 3, 1922, when God, in His infinite mercy, released him from all sorrow and suffering and called him home aged 74 years, 5 months and 3 days. He was converted in childhood and united with the M. E. church. He leaves to mourn his loss, his aged wife and four children: Mrs. Maude Lorimor of Alamosa, Colo.; Mrs. Cora Inez Dowler, Martin B. and E. Lisle Travis of Peru. One son, Elbert H., died in October, 1893. Eighteen grandchildren, four brothers: Wm. M. of Winterset, J. B., T. H. and S. C. Travis of Peru; three sisters: Mrs. Mary E. Foresman and Mrs. Schoenenberger of Winterset, and Mrs. Eva Foster of Great Bend, Kans., and a great many nephews and nieces. He was raised to a Master Mason in the year 1874 in Neophyte lodge at Prairie Grove, receiving a demit to Winterset lodge and was a charger member of Hazel lodge at Peru. Rev. Shannon read the scripture lesson and offered prayer. J. W. Frankelberger of Winterset conducted the funeral service using the beautiful Masonic ceremony. The pall bearers were all nephews of the deceased and brother Masons. Interment in Peru cemetery.
