Petrie and Robert Youker, two well-known Tama County farmers, living north of Montour in the old Indiantown neighborhood, were instantly killed Saturday night by being struck by Chicago, Great Western passenger train No. 3, southbound. The accident happened shortly after 7 o'clock, at the East Main street crossing, about three and one-half miles east of the city. Petrie and Youker had both been to the city to trade on Saturday, and Petrie was accompanying Youker home in the latter's wagon. Both men were squarely hit, the left side of each victim's head being crushed. The left shoulders of both men were broken, also the left arms, and the left legs below the knees. The bodies were not mutilated other than the fractures to the skull of each and the bruises about the heads and faces. One of the horses was hurt, but the other one escaped. After striking the men the engineer brought the train to a standstill as soon as possible, and a search was made by the train crew for the bodies. For some time the bodies could not be found, but they were later discovered lying across the engine pilot, where they had been carried by the terrific momentum of the train. Both victims of the accident were well known in western Tama and eastern Marshall counties. Petrie was an old settler of Tama county, and was 78 years of age. He was a widower and is survived by eight grown children, four sons and four daughters. One of his daughters, Mrs. L. Mentor, resides in this city, as does also one son, George Petrie. Youker was 35 years of age, and leaves a wife and four small children.
