Died of Disease July 18, 1863, Black Hawk County, Iowa Page 449-451 War Record of Black Hawk County The Thirty First Infantry was mustered into service at Davenport by Capt. Hendershoot on the 13th of October, 1862 and under the command of Col. William Smyth too transport and moved down the river November 1st 1862 arriving at Helena, Ark., the 20th, on the 27th of the same month, they started on an expedition to the Cold Water river, in Mississippi, returning to Helena December 7th. Two weeks later they started on the Yazoo River expedition, and the regiment was partially engaged in the battle of Chickasaw Bayou, on the 27th thru the 28th. On the 2th of January, 1863 they started for a point near Arkansas Post where they arrived on the 9th and on the night of the 10th marched through swamps and mire to the rear of the enemy's works, where on the 11th they hotly engaged in the capture of the place. From that point the regiment was ordered to Young's Point, LA, where they remained in camp until April 2nd, when they moved again up the river to Greenville, MS, and after some skirmishing and considerable foraging the mules cattle, horse, hogs, and even Negroes returned to Young's Point on the 26th of the same month. From here they moved toward Jackson MS. The regiment was under fire at Raymond on the 12th; was at the taking of Jackson the 14th, and again under fire at Black River of the 16th, reaching the rear of Vicksburg of the 18th, where it was engaged on the 23rd in a terrible but successful charged on the enemy's works and was from this time steadily under fire till the fall of Vicksburg on the 4th day of July. The Thirty-first was mustered out of service at Louisville June 27th, 1865, and came to Davenport, where they were paid off and disbanded. Probate Number #401 -- Sylvester Rice, resident of Spring Creek township, Black Hawk County, Iowa departed this life July 18, 1863, leaving no last will and testament, and surviving him his widow, Mary Elizabeth Rice.
