Bender of Charles Town, WV, Mary “Pat” Smith (Mick) of Woodstock, MD, Barbara J. Young (Bob) of Seaford, DE, John A. Bender of Damascus, MD, and Stephen J. Bender and Cecilia F. Shirley (Randy), both of Hagerstown, MD; stepdaughter, Joann F. Brown (Tom) of Cooksville, MD; her special 15 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; many wonderful nieces and nephews; special relatives, Mark J. Everett, Maria A. Bender, Karen Mulligan, and her extended Bender and Lyon Families; and close friends, Reba Shobe, Nellie May French and Wanda Staples. Sylvia spent much of her life with her kids and their friends, from being Mother Viking in the early years of the Kenmont swim team in Kensington, MD, to traveling with the East Stroudsburg High School Band in the 1980s. She also volunteered at the schools her children attended, RRR Car Club to benefit Disabled Veterans and 25 years with the Washington County (MD) chapter of the American Red Cross bloodmobiles. She also loved crossword puzzles, music, gardening, reading and going dancing. The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the American Red Cross. A celebration of her life will be held Sunday, August 18, at the Maugansville, MD Ruritan Building from noon to 4 p.m. Burial will be in St. Peter’s Cemetery, Westernport, MD at the family’s discretion.
