Griffith Stemple, age 96, a former resident of Oakland, MD and more recently a resident of Valley Bend, WV died peacefully on August 22, 2017 at United Hospital Center in Bridgeport, one day shy of her 97th birthday. She was born Sylvia Idabell Griffith, on Monday, August 23, 1920, in Pierce, WV, daughter of the late Harry and Lucy Taylor Griffith. She was born Sylvia Idabell Griffith, on Monday, August 23, 1920, in Pierce, WV, daughter of the late Harry and Lucy Taylor Griffith. Preceding her in death are husband, Blaine, who passed in 1970; seven sisters and six brothers: William Griffith, Larry Griffith, Roy Griffith, Lucy Marie Bray, Lyal Griffith, Nellie Wolfe, Harold Griffith, Herbert Griffith, Erma Hopkins, Doris Lewis, Fayetta Slaubaugh, Esther Snyder, and Nalda Toms; as well as many nieces and nephews, including two special nieces, Esther (Sissy) Bray and Nila Cooper; a special nephew, Roger Snyder, and grandson, Jeffery Eye. She is survived by two sons, James Stemple and wife, Linda Wright Stemple, of Martinsburg, WV and Harry Stemple and wife, Sonja Jones Stemple, of Valley Bend, WV; brother in law, Donald Toms, of Hagerstown, MD; grandchildren, Sabrena Stemple Allen and husband, James Jr (Bud) of Strasburg, VA, Sara Nicole Marquis of Myrtle Beach, SC, Shannon Stemple and wife, Sandy, of Martinsburg, WV, Debbie Nutter and husband, Scott, of Dayton, MD, Cheryl Eye Hildreth and husband, Andy, of Raleigh, NC, David Eye and wife, Stacy Slater Eye, of Raleigh, NC, Tim Eye and wife, Jeanne Sickle Eye, of Westminster, SC, and Kenneth High of Timberville, VA; great grandchildren, Lauren Beth Allen, of Strasburg, VA, and Nicole Allen Crowder and husband, Jed, of Edinburg, VA; great great-grandchildren, Austin Stemple of Martinsburg, Noah Crowder, age 7, of Strasburg, VA, and Parker Crowder, age 6 days, of Edinburg, VA. Sylvia was alert and able to hold baby Parker in her arms when he was only 4 days old. Surviving nieces and nephews, especially close to Sylvia, helping with caregiving, in addition to friendship: Lucy Lewis Daffron and husband, Joe, of Fairfax, VA and Canaan, Rebecca Snyder Parks and husband, Tom, of Montrose, WV and Shirley Liller Bittinger,of Oakland, MD, whose husband, Carl, has passed. Nieces and nephews, Becky Bittinger Roth and husband, Jason, of Red House, MD, Donna Toms Drenner and husband, Denny, of Hagerstown, MD, Rick Toms and wife, Stephanie, of Chambersburg, PA, Terry Snyder and wife, Patty, of Ashland City, TN, Ronnie Snyder and wife, Val, of Brooklyn Heights, OH, Garry Lee and wife, Beverly, of Montrose, WV and Keith Griffith and wife, Karen, of Hanover, PA, also remained especially close to Sylvia throughout her life. Close friends considered family, always ready and willing to help, Ann Miller Sweitzer and husband, Melvin, of Swanton, MD, Rebecca Maroney of Oakland, CA, Lois Rochester of Westminster, SC, and Juanita Cosner of Timberville, VA. Three surviving grand dogs, Max, Maggie, and Mugsy, adored Sylvia, and now fight over who gets to sleep in her recliner; needless to say, a most definite no-no in the past! Sylvia worked as a waitress at the old Chimney Corner restaurant in Red House, MD when her two boys were little. Ultimately, she was employed at Bausch & Lomb in Oakland, MD, retiring after 15 years.∼Sylvia was the second wife of James BLAINE Stemple. - She was daughter of Harry and Lucy (Taylor) Griffith. - Sylvia and Blaine had two sons: James and Harry. - Her obit is current at the Randolph Funeral Home
