Sylvia Louise (Thompson) Gist died peacefully in her sleep on June 7, 2016 at the Hospice House in Rapid City, SD due to complications from a brain bleed on May 2. Sylvia was born November 1, 1917 at the family farm near Colman, SD, the middle child of Albert and Bergetha (Jordahl) Thompson. She graduated from Colman High School in 1936. On May 25, 1941 she married John “Jack” Gist of Madison, at her parent’s home. Jack and Sylvia lived in Madison for most of their married life. For many years they enjoyed wintering in McAllen TX. In 2004, they moved to Lamberton, MN to be near their daughter Jerrilyn and Forry Benz and family. After Jack’s death in 2009, she divided her time between the Benzes and daughter Jacqualyn and Peter Fuller of Lead. This arrangement allowed her to be an important part of the lives of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren’s lives. Sylvia was a quiet, loving and kind woman who never met a child she did not love. She was accepting of all people and always looked for and expected the best. She was an incredible mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and aunt. She is survived by her daughters and husbands, Jerrilyn (Forry) Benz of Lamberton, MN and Jacqualyn (Peter) Fuller of Lead, SD; seven grandchildren, Trisha, Brett & Kersten Benz and Brook, Jason, Thad & Alecia Fuller; 21 great-grandchildren; one sister Violet of Hansen and numerous nieces & nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Jack, and siblings Delvin, Dorothy, Leonard, Crist, and Helen. Memorials may be made to the United Methodist Church of choice, Lake County Historical Society or charity of choice.
