Tople was born on Sunday, July 9, 1922 to Charles and Grace (Morris) Tople in Brown County, South Dakota near Hecla. She was baptized and confirmed at Bethlehem Lutheran Church at Pierpont, South Dakota. On October 7, 1939 she married Chester Mahlen at Pierpont, South Dakota. Tople was born on Sunday, July 9, 1922 to Charles and Grace (Morris) Tople in Brown County, South Dakota near Hecla. She was baptized and confirmed at Bethlehem Lutheran Church at Pierpont, South Dakota. On October 7, 1939 she married Chester Mahlen at Pierpont, South Dakota. After their marriage the couple lived and farmed in the Roslyn vicinity until 1969, when they moved into Roslyn. Sylvia worked in Webster including Hazel Phillips' Café and Dakotah, Inc. In 1972 she started working at the Roslyn Meat Market for Bob Coyne and later, for Tubby and Craig Schmidt. She retired in 1988. She was an active member of the Roslyn Lutheran Church where she served in various offices in Circle and Ladies Aide. She enjoyed quilting, watching her children and grandchildren play sports, and was an active Roslyn Vikings fan for over 50 years. Sylvia passed away on Friday, October 28, 2005 at Lake Area Hospital in Webster at the age of 83 years, 3 months and 9 days. Survivors include her husband, Chester of Roslyn; one daughter, Robert (Dwight) Knapp of Canby, OR; five sons, Daryl Mahlen (and special friend, Mary Olson) of Osakis, MN, Dennis Mahlen (and special friend, Nancy Gronholz) of Appleton, MN, Ron (Ardis) Mahlen of Bloomington, MN, Don (Becky) Mahlen of Webster, SD and John (Corinne) Mahlen of Roslyn, SD; one sister, Charlotte (John) Peterson of Apple Valley, MN; fourteen grandchildren, Todd and Trent Mahlen, Becky Verma, Michelle Coggin, David Knapp, Steve and Nancy Mahlen, Josh and Jason Mahlen, Sadie, Tara and Marcus Mahlen, Angie and Corey Mahlen; and nine great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, a granddaughter, Tammy Mahlen, four sisters, eight brothers and a daughter-in-law. Her funeral will be Monday, October 31, 2005 at Roslyn Lutheran Church with Janet Johnson officiating. Burial will be in the Fron Lutheran Cemetery. Arrangements by Fiksdal Funeral Service in Webster.
