Sylvina was born Sept. 21, 1905, in Alton, the daughter of Jacob and Mary (Haupert) Klein. She was raised in the Alton area and received her education at St. Mary's Academy in Alton, from which she graduated in 1925. She then attended Clarke College in Dubuque, where she received her teaching certificate and then taught in rural school in the Alton area. Sylvina married Joseph Schaul on June 8, 1931, at Leeds, Iowa. They lived and farmed for several years near Le Mars, Iowa, and then Hospers, Iowa. They then moved near Alton and farmed until retiring and moving into Alton in 1968. Joseph died on June 3, 1994. In 1997, Sylvina moved to Happy Siesta Health Care Center in Remsen. She moved to Heritage Manor Nursing Home in Dubuque on Aug. 8, 2000. Survivors include a daughter, Carol; a son, Gene; two grandsons, Erich, and David; and a great-grandson, Devaughn. She also was preceded in death by six sisters, Ann Huss, Margaret Hansen, Elizabeth (Sister Verna O.S.F.), Mary Klein, Lena Klein and Christine Klein; and five brothers; Mike, Charles, Matt, Bernard and Ray Klein.
