Description	:	MEMORIAL TO TAFT BURNETT Note:Organized the Rebels Creek Quartet, approximately 1947. Dad was named after the Taft family of Ohio, and President Theodore Roosevelt. Dad said, "When your mother and I woke up the morning after getting married,(Honey Moon at Marion Hotel, Marion, NC) I reached for my socks, and found $2.00, and that was all the money we had". Their first home was a one room 8'x10'building on the right side of the road, just above the McKinney Mine road, driving north. The building, still standing, with additional siding. My oldest sister Linda Sue was born there. The family later moved to Rebels Creek, Boonford,NC. where they built a house on property purchased from Mother's parents Fornum & Rosa Jarrett. Rosalie and Roger (me) were born there. David was born at the Marion, NC Hospital. Dad owned and operated several Felspar and Mica operations, including the transport of the mineral to the Flotation Plants in North Carolina. Dad and Mother owned three farms, two on Rebels Creek, plus the home place, another at Little Switzerland. He raised Cattle, grew Hay, corn and had a one acre garden. Because of his integrity and work ethic, Dad was offered a part ownership with Brad Ragan tire Co.in it's infant stages. This Company grew to be the top Good Year Franchises in the US. Dad declined after very much consideration of other business interest. I don't know if he ever regretted this decision. During the second World War, Mother took care of every thing around the house and farm, because Dad had to work in Bryson City, NC supporting the war effort in the Mica Industry. Mica was use for Aircraft instruments in WWII. The Mica was hoisted 500 ft by cable in a large steel bucket to the surface, loaded on trucks, then hauled to the flotation Plants. My dad, Taft Burnett, Uncle Fred Jarrett, Uncle Sam Green hauled the mica in their trucks. Uncle Fred Howell worked in the mine, and was almost killed in a cave-in. The large steel bucket was the only transport for Mica, and personal. The mine shaft was approximately 500 in depth. After the war, the entire family visited the mines to see the old mine. Dad said it looked like everything was in place. The alternate exit was a series of staggered, old wooden ladders which looked unsafe to climb. Dad had completed an Aircraft flying course and only needed to complete his solo training to be a Pilot. When the war broke out, he went to join the Army Air Corp. They deferred him home, and told him his work was more vital to the National war effort than anything he do in the Military. After the Second World War, Dad and Nathan Boone started a Felspar mining partnership for several years. In finalizing this short summary, Dad was raised in a singing famiy. His Dad Wilburn Burnett held music schools in Mitchell, and several surrounding counties, and also led the Choir at Chesnut Grove Baptist Church, Little Switzerland, NC. My Dad, Taft led the choir at the Rebels Creek Baptist Church, until he passed away. The following were members of Rebels Creek Baptist Church: The four men: Herbert Howell, Howard Ray Boone, Ted Howell, and my Dad, Taft, with sister Linda Sue, playing the Keyboard, started the Rebels Creek Quartet, approximately 1947.Later the younger men moved away from the area. With in few weeks,Dad put together the Burnett trio. Four of us children with Linda Sue on the Key Board, Rosalie at Soprano, David on Baritone, and my self on Tenor. We first started singing at the Carolina Theater in Spruce Pine NC. At Approximately the same time O.D. Calhoun and his friend Myron Houston acquired the Carolina Theater. On Occasion the Burnett Trio would sing at the Carolina Theater on the, "Carolina Barn Dance", a national syndicated Radio program that reached 551 radio station across the country, including all the states except Washington state. With the help of the Liberty Broadcasting Co. Before each broadcast a man would climb a telephone pole adjacent to the theater, connect the wires. At the end of the show he would climb back up the pole and disconnect the wires. This ritual was repeated each Friday night. NOTE: Go to the web for more information on "THE CAROLINA BARN DANCE." My sister, Linda Sue graduated from High School, leaving home to attend Nursing School in Rutherford,NC. Sister Rosalie, started playing the Key Board, Dad sing soprano, Brother David at Baritone, myself on Tenor, along with Uncle Dan Jarrett on Bass. After my Dad, Taft Burnett passed away in 1964. Uncle Dan Jarrett, and wife Georgia Boone, with children Peggy, Rita, and Jannie kept the Quartet going until Uncle Dan Jarrett passed away in 2007. Uncle Dan's daughter Jannie, and her son Jarrett have continued the group. They go by "Rebels Creek". The Rebels Creek(Quartet)longevity has existed over half a century, Amazing!
