Description	:	John Clemons, his wife Abigail Southwick, and six children came from Danvers, Mass, to Brownfield, Maine, in 1779 and then to Hiram in 1780 where they settled between the two ponds which bear the family name. The only close neighbors of John and Abigail Clemons were Tom Hegon (or Tomheagon), the Indian Hunter, and his squaw. After the death of Mr. Clemons in 1790 two of the children died suddenly. Mrs. Clemons left the bodies and went several miles through the woods to secure the assistance of Daniel Boston, who went back with her and dug a wide grave into which she laid her two daughters' bodies without religious ceremony. They were buried on the oak ridge west of the Clemons homestead, but there is now no indication of the graves to be found. The foregoing information comes from G. T. Ridlon's "Saco Valley Settlements and Families". Dr. William Teg, in his "History of Hiram" wrote that when the time came for John and Abigail Clemons to leave this world, their remains were interred on the summit of the sandy pine-clad ridge a few hundred feet to the west of the Indian Mound. The two daughters, Tamar and Delilah Clemons, as well as Tom Hegon and his squaw, were interred there. All of the graves are unmarked.
