Novotny, 65, three miles northwest of Clutier, whose serious illness has been noted frequently in the Star-Clipper during the last several weeks, died at 6:45 o clock Monday morning. She had been in failing health several months, and had been gradually failing during the last three months. She was in St. Francis Hospital in Waterloo twice during this time, but specialists there were unable to relieve her trouble. She suffered acutely at times, and bore her affliction bravely. During the last three weeks she was under the care of Mrs. Vince Kuzela, of Clutier, trained nurse. The funeral was held at St. Vaclav church at 10 o clock Wednesday morning, attended by a large crowd of sympathizing relatives and friends. The Rev. Father T. A. Vopatek conducted the service. Casketbearers selected were all nephews of the decedent - Milo and Will Tomas, Milo and Joe Zmolek, Eddie and George Zmolek. Burial was in St. Vaclav cemetery. Mrs. Novotny was a native of Tama county, and her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Zmolek, who came to America from Bohemia soon after their marriage, were early settlers of south Tama county. Mrs. Novotny came with her parents to Carroll township when she was a young girl, the family settling on the farm now occupied by Frank Jesina. She was 19 when she was married to John W. Novotny January 27, 1889. With the exception of one year spent in Toledo, her entire life was passed in Carroll township. During the last twenty-six years, her home was on the Carroll township farm where she died. Her husband preceded her in death on September 25, 1932. Mrs. Novotny was the devoted and beloved mother of ten children, eight of whom are living: William, Anton, Vince, Mrs. Fred Yuska and Mrs. Vitus Novotny, all of the Clutier vicinity; Ed J., Clutier garage operator; and Emil and Libby, at home. A son, Joe, died seven years ago, and a daughter died in infancy. There are eleven grandchildren. She is also survived by two brothers, Fred Zmolek, of Perry township; and Steve, of Carroll. Mrs. Novotny s husband, her sister, Mrs. Joe Tomas, and a brother, John Zmolek, all died within a year. A brother, Anton Zmolek, died many years ago, and three brothers, Peter, Milo, and Frank, all passed on when young. Mrs. Novotny was a member of St. Vaclav Catholic parish most of her life, and was active in the Rosary society of the church. She will be greatly missed in her home, in the church, and in the community. [Traer Star Clipper; 30 August 1935]
