Van Laar Friday Mrs. Gerard Van Laar, daughter of Mrs. Fannie Kooima of Rock Valley, died Friday morning in a hospital at Willard, Ohio, after an illness of four weeks, according to word received, the same day by her brothers and sisters here. Her mother left for Ohio three weeks ago to be with her. Mrs. Van Laar was the second oldest child of Mr. and Mrs. Jake Kooima. Her father died in September, 1838. She was born in Rock Valley and grew up here, attending the Rock Valley schools and in 1918 was married to Mr. Van Laar who was then a theological student. They lived in Grand Rapids, Mich., until he had completed his studies at Calvin college and seminary and when he was ordained seven years ago they went to Willard where he was installed as pastor of the Christian Reformed church and where they had made their home since that time. Three children, with the widower, are left to mourn the departure of mother and wife. They are Frances (Mrs. Thomas Sharda) of Willard; John and Jacob, still at home. Nine brothers and sisters, besides her mother, all but one of whom live in this vicinity, also mourn the passing of Mrs. Van Laar. They are Mrs. John Meendering, Simon Kooima, Mrs. Robert Jacobsma, Mrs. Joe De Wit and Tony Kooima, all of Rock Valley; Charles, Grand Rapids, Michigan, Mrs. John Dekkers, Hawarden, Gerrit Kooima, Hudson, S.D., and Thomas Kooima of Rock Valley. One brother, John Kooima, died 12 years ago, and Mrs. Van Laar's passing leaves nine of the eleven Kooima children surviving. She was a favorite in a wide circle of friends and her death causes deep sorrow here and heartfelt sympathy for the family who are bereaved of the loving care of wife and mother. Funeral services were held at Willard on Tuesday afternoon and burial was also made there. A number from here went to Ohio for the funeral, including Mr. and Mrs. John Meendering Mr. and Mrs. Sam Kooima, Mrs. Joe De Wit, Tony, Gerrit and Ted Kooima, and Frances Jacobsma.
