Jim Heithoff officiating. Burial was at Grandview Cemetery at Long Pine. Rosary was Tuesday at the church. Hoch Funeral Home in Bassett was in charge of arrangements. He was born Dec. 14, 1921, in Long Pine to Andrew S. and Katharine (Bosak) Stec. On April 26, 1949, he married Helen Vesper in Long Pine. Survivors include his wife of nearly 63 years, Helen; daughter, Jeanne; son, Roger and his wife, Sheri; grandchildren, Scott Rieker, John Rieker, Ryan Stec and his wife, Jessica, Chad Stec, Wade Stec, Amanda Stec and Jason Sigle, and Sadie and Tanner Stec; great-grandchildren, Tripton and Gentry Stec, Cameron Stec and Casey and Caitlyn Sigle; sister, Sister Rose Stec; sister-in law, Delores Stec; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Robert and Gloria Vesper; and numerous relatives and friends. He was the sixth of seven children in his family. John lived most of his life ranching in Rock and Brown counties. For two years John worked at the Gates Rubber Co. and at the Swift Packing Plant in Denver. He and Helen were married at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Long Pine. They were blessed with three children, Jeanne, Richard and Roger. John was an important influence on a number of nephews and friends of Richard and Roger who lived temporarily with John and Helen over the years. John's greatest joys in life were his family and extended family and life on the ranch, raising cattle, riding and breaking horses, and training cattle dogs. He worked at Bassett Livestock Auction for nearly 40 years. He drove the Belgian draft horse team for the family hayrack ride on Christmas Day 2010 and was on his saddle horse helping work cattle in April 2011. He was preceded in death by his son, Richard; his parents; brothers, Joseph, Edward and his wife, Jeannine, and Frank and his wife, Maxine; sisters, Mary Anderson Hoeber and her husband, Frank, and Anna Gasseling and her husband, Lawrence; and brother-in-law, Sexton Anderson. Music at his service was provided by Kathy Magnussen, organist, and Scott Rieker, soloist and leader of the congregational singing. Casket bearers were Dan Anderson II, Tory Beck, Steve Larsen, Joe R. Leonard III, Dan Sandall, Ryan Stec, Tanner Stec and Eric Wegener. Published in Kearney Hub from April 21 to April 22, 2012
