Flanagan, who was police chief here for twelve years and was dean of local law enforcement officers when he retired in 1946, died today at his home, 34 Oakland Ave., after a long illness. He was court officer of the Fourth District court for nearly 20 years. A native of Ireland, he came here as a young man, and after brief residence in New York came to Attleboro where he engaged in the jewelry trade, being a skilled bench hand. He won rapid promotion when he became a member of the police force under the late John H. Nerney and in his active career as a police officer won wide recognition for his able prosecution of many important cases. He was named as a reserve officer in the department on Jan. 21, 1915 and became a regular patrolman on Jan. 1, 1916. He became a lieutenant on Jan, 11, 1916 and on Jan. 1, 1923 was named acting chief. He became chief on Feb. 7, 1923, and served until Feb. 1935, when he severed connection with the department for a period of four years, through a change in the local political situation. He continued as court officer, and as a county police officer, however. On March 19, 1939 he was reinstated as a sergeant in the department, under appointment of then Mayor John W. McIntyre and continued in this rank until his retirement on Sept. 20, 1946. Fellow workers in police circles throughout New England held the highest respect and esteem for Chief Flanagan as a law enforcement officer who held sternly to his duties despite frequent changes in the local political scene. He was honored by the Mass. Police Chiefs association as an officer, and he won numerous commendations from federal and state officials for his excellent cooperation in matters, some of them highly secret, in which he assisted them. Through his active work one cleverly planned counterfeiting plant located here was put out of business and the operators caught. He had a cheerful hearty personality which won many warm friends and he was often sought as an after-dinner speaker at many occasions. Fraternally he was a member of the Attleboro lodge of Elks, the Aerie of Eagles and of St. John's council, K. of C., while he served for many years as treasurer of local Court, Mass. Catholic Order of Foresters. He was a member of the Police Relief association and Treasurer of the County Heights Taxpayers association. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Delia (Coleman) Flanagan: a son William J., deputy internal revenue collector for the local district, and two daughters, Mrs. Eugene LaCroix of this city, and Mrs. Edward Bartley of Norton. There are five grandchildren. He also leaves two brothers, Owen, of Glenhead, Long Island, and John, in Ireland, and three sisters, Mrs. Teresa McNally of Philadelphia, Mrs. Rose Kinsella of Brooklyn, and Miss Margaret Flanagan of Ireland. The funeral will be held from the late residence at 34 Oakland st Monday morning at 8:15 with solemn requiem mass at 9 at the Holy Ghost church, County Heights. Burial will be in St. John's cemetery.
