Terry died Saturday, July 22, 2017, at O’Neill Care and Rehabilitation in O’Neill, Nebraska. Terry D. Cizek passed away at the age of 69 on Saturday, July 22, 2017, while under Hospice Care at the O’Neill Care and Rehabilitation Center. He was born at Lynch to Lumir and Evelyn (Rossmeier) Cizek on July 19, 1948, the oldest of four children. Terry attended Spencer Public Schools all 12 years, graduating as part of the infamous Class of 1966. It is probably a safe bet to assume that Terry was one of the leaders in the incident during their Senior Sneak Trip to Colorado that resulted in no out-of-state Sneak Trips for several years. Terry was a natural athlete and excelled in all the high school sports, receiving several All Conference, MVP, and NEN Top 20 awards. He maintained his love of sports all through his life. Many memories were made during the regular pick-up baseball games as a kid, the Fast Pitch Softball games and Dart Tournaments he played a part in. He looked forward to watching any of the Husker sports teams and his beloved Yankees. Even as his dementia was stealing away other memories, he could be counted on as a pretty accurate source of statistics and/or when the next game of those favorite teams was going to be on TV. Following high school, Terry attended UNL for a number of years, switching majors a couple of times before dropping out just shy of graduation to pursue a short career in carpentry and building construction. While the building career may not have lasted that long, building things out of old wood was a lifelong passion, as was collecting “valuable” old stuff to reuse or repurpose. During this time he married Elaine Mulhair. They later divorced but maintained an on-again off-again relationship for quite a number of years. In 1979, Terry returned to Spencer and purchased the bar from Elsie Barr and started to remodel it. This building was once the Corn Exchange Bank and was reopened on St. Patrick’s Day 1980, as the Corn Exchange Bar. The Corn Exchange became one of the more popular bars in the area and was known for it’s St. Patrick’s Day anniversary parties and Halloween costume parties among other events. While operating the Corn Exchange, Terry was fairly active in community events, serving on the town council, sponsoring a fast-pitch softball team, helping organize the first Wild Turkey Days celebration, and serving on the HWY 12 Outlaw Trails council, among other things. Terry became burned out with the bar business and sold the Corn Exchange in 2005. Following the sale he did several different jobs including being a site manager at a retirement home in Fort Collins, CO; working with troubled youth at the Springfield Academy in Springfield, SD and at the Tipton Academy in Tipton Kansas; a surveillance officer at the Ft Randall Casino; a security guard and surveillance officer at the Ohiya Casino in Santee; and a flagman for Werner Construction. In the last several years he began experiencing slowly worsening symptoms of dementia which he attempted to control to the best of his ability and sought assistance that allowed him to remain at home for as long as possible. Terry is survived by a sister, Kathleen Kay Cizek of O’Neill; brothers, Ronald Cizek of Spencer and John Cizek (Sharon) of Sutherland, NE; nephews, Aaron Cizek of Wilderville, OR and Andrew Cizek (Davina) of Pagosa Springs, CO; nine grand-nephews and two grand-nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lumir and Evelyn Cizek; and a nephew, Craig Cizek. Terry’s motto in his High School Senior yearbook was “The greatest pleasure in life is to do what people say you cannot do.” By that measure, he had a pleasurable life.
