Read More	Terry Harper Sr. SENECA Terry Harper Sr., a two-time candidate for Oconee County Council, died last weekend after being in a coma for almost five months. A Oconee County native and Salem resident, Mr. Harper, 46, suffered brain injuries in August when his motorcycle struck a horse while he was going to work. He recently had been moved to a room at the Lila Doyle Nursing Care Facility in Seneca after spending about two months in Oconee Memorial Hospital. Prior to that, he was in intensive care at Greenville Memorial Hospital. Mr. Harper's wife, Margaret Kay Harper, said her husband had been sick for about a week before he died Saturday. "I don't really know what killed him - it's possible his brain started swelling again," she said. "The accident took away his life." She said that though "it gets hard sometimes," she and her family have been "holding up all right." "I appreciate everyone who has stood by us and and prayed for us," she said. "I wouldn't have been able to make it without the Lord's help and the people's help." A Democrat, Mr. Harper lost to Tim Hall III for the District 1 County Council seat in a June 1998 special election and then a November 1998 regular election. Though he was in the coma, Mr. Harper received more than 28 percent of the votes in the November race. Mrs. Harper said her husband of 26 years would have made a good council member. "He was an honest man," she said. "He only wanted what the people needed and would have done his best for the people because be cared about them." Mike Evatt, past chairman of the Oconee County Democratic Party, said he will remember Mr. Harper as polite, professional and kind-hearted. "Terry was very energetic and made a good candidate," he said. "I've never heard a harsh word about him." The Salem High School graduate was an electrician at the Westpoint Stevens Clemson plant and a basic electrical wiring and small engine repair instructor at Tri-County Technical College. He also was a Salem Fire and Rescue Squad member. Funeral services will start at 2 p.m. today at the Davenport Funeral Home chapel in Walhalla. Mr. Harper will be buried in Oconee Memorial Park.
