Read More	Tevis Thomas Durbin January 11, 1927 - July 5, 2015 CUMBERLAND - Tevis Thomas (Ted) Durbin, 88, of Cumberland, passed away on Sunday July 5, 2015 in the hometown that he cherished. Born on January 11, 1927, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Norman and Wilda (Clem) Durbin. Ted left Fort Hill High School during his senior year in 1945 to enlist in the United States Navy. He served in the South Pacific during World War II aboard the U.S.S. Tallulah. After the war he was honorably discharged and returned to Cumberland where he completed his high school education, graduating from Fort Hill with the class of 1947. Ted was a gifted athlete, playing both baseball and basketball under Coach Bobby Cavanagh at Fort Hill. However, he discovered a special talent and passion for baseball and after graduation, he and his childhood pal Vernon Penner both signed to play for the Brooklyn Dodgers. They had also been offered contracts by the Pittsburgh Pirates. The two reported for and participated in the Dodger's spring training camp in Vero Beach, Florida. But Ted missed his hometown after being away for the war and came home to Cumberland where he excelled in local baseball and fast-pitch softball leagues well into the 1960s. He played on many championship teams, especially for the VFW in what was known as The Rocking Chair League. During the 1960s he also coached church league basketball for Mapleside Methodist Church, and assisted Jon Daum in coaching baseball for the Dodgers in the Little League and the Lions in the Hot Stove league. In the late 1960s Ted gave up playing fast-pitch softball, and with the influence of a local tennis buff, "Boots" Sapp, began playing the game on the courts at Constitution Park with Boots and then at the old Garlitz Tennis Club on Williams Road. Ted got his son, Terry, interested in tennis as well. Terry went on to play at Fort Hill, Allegany Community College, and received a tennis scholarship to West Virginia University. Ted and Terry participated in many local tournaments through the 1970s and 80s. Ted had also played golf most of his adult life, for a number of years at the Fort Cumberland Golf Course (also known as The Rock Pile), and in later years as a member of Maplehurst Country Club. In 2011 Ted shot his age (84) three time at Maplehurst. He and his son Terry also won the 2011 Member-Guest Tournament at Maplehurst on Father's Day of that year. In addition to golf, Ted was also an avid bowler. He was on many leagues through the years at White Oaks Bowling Lanes, The Bowler, and in later years duck pin leagues at The Capital Bowling Center on Virginia Avenue. Ted was a member of the V.F.W, the American Legion, the Cumberland Outdoor Club, the Goodfellowship Club. He thoroughly enjoyed attending the summer picnics of all these organizations with his wife, Colleen. He was also a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and was extremely active in volunteering his time for numerous functions at the church through age 87 when ill health forced him retire. Ted worked at the C&P Telephone Company for over 35 years, first as a lineman, and later as a central office repairman. Surviving are his wife of 66 years, Colleen Mae Durbin Breighner), of Cumberland; his son Dr. Terry Tevis Durbin and wife Barbara of Hershey Pa.; grandson Craig S. Williams and wife Lyndsay of Hershey Pa.; granddaughter Kristi Williams of Jersey City, NJ; great-grandson Jackson Tevis Williams and great-granddaughter, Mikayla Mae Williams and great-granddaughter Victoria Lennon Williams Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home P.A. 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland on Wednesday from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. A Funeral Service will be conducted at the funeral home on Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. with the Reverend Tormod Svensson officiating. Interment will be in the Maryland State Veteran's Cemetery, Rocky Gap. Military Honors will be accorded by the Post 13 Veteran's Honor Guard.
