Parsons July 17, 1910 - Jan. 21, 2005 Thelma Alice Ford Parsons was born July 17, 1910, in Grassy Cove, TN, the oldest daughter of Thomas Young and Savannah Louise Hamby Ford. She attended the Grassy Cove Academy until it was closed and her family moved to the Oak Hill community so the children could attend the Cumberland Mountain (Methodist) School, from which she graduated high school. Read More	Thelma A. F. Parsons July 17, 1910 - Jan. 21, 2005 Thelma Alice Ford Parsons was born July 17, 1910, in Grassy Cove, TN, the oldest daughter of Thomas Young and Savannah Louise Hamby Ford. She attended the Grassy Cove Academy until it was closed and her family moved to the Oak Hill community so the children could attend the Cumberland Mountain (Methodist) School, from which she graduated high school. She caught the train at the old depot and rode it to Cookeville to attend Tennessee Polytechnic Institute to finish her college degree in teaching. She was a school teacher for 44 years. In Cumberland County she taught at Burgesstown, Tabor, Bowman, Creston, Slate Springs, Oak Hill, Woodlawn and Crossville City School. After teaching for 24 years in Tennessee she and her husband moved to Orlando, FL, where she taught another 20 years at Pine Hills Elementary School before retiring and returning to Crossville. She taught Sunday school at Killarney Baptist Church in Winter Park, FL, for 20 years, and made an around-the-world trip with the Baptist World Alliance. After returning to Crossville, she taught Sunday school at Central Baptist Church where she was a member when she passed away. Mrs. Parsons was a member of Phi Delta Kappa, honorary teachers organization, and a past Worthy Matron of the Order of Eastern Star. She was a member of the Crab Orchard Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, on the service of her great-great-great-grandfather, John Ford Sr., Revolutionary War soldier who settled in Grassy Cove in 1801. She was a member of the Captain Sally Tompkins 2123 Chapter, United Daughters of the Confederacy, on the service of her great-grandfather, Thomas Wesley Ford, and his brothers, John Fletcher, Elbert Henley, and Elijah Jehu Ford. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alma Theo (Tom) Parsons; parents, T.Y. and Savannah Ford; brothers, Fred, Clell (Lena), Eugene (Mera) and Richard Ford; sister, Alma Ford (Sam) Burnett; and stepdaughter, Virginia (Johnny) Benson. She is survived by her sons, Thomas Bernard (Norma) Parsons of Tampa, FL and Eugene Hope (Barbara) Parsons of Crossville; stepdaughters, Ruth (Austin) Maynard of Crossville and Alva Parsons of Cookeville. She is also survived by sisters-in-law, Louise (Fred) Ford of Crossville and Grace (Richard) Ford of San Diego, CA, 13 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 25, with burial in Oak Hill Baptist Church Cemetery. The Rev. Roland Smith, senior pastor; the Rev. Scott White, associate pastor; and the Rev. Scott York, music minister of Central Baptist Church, officiated. Jack Irvin, soloist, and Mrs. Michael (Deborah) Wood, pianist, performed special music. Active pallbearers are Sam Burnett, Daryl Beard, Kenneth Lane Ford, John Schubert, Paul Ford and Terry Maynard. Honorary pallbearers are Boyd Raper, Bob Eldridge, Hugh Eldridge, Tom Herring and E. E.(Pete) Ford, Jr. Bilbrey Funeral Home, Inc. was in charge of the arrangements.
