She died Saturday, March 28, 2009, at Faith Regional Health Services. --- Thelma Catherine was born to Albert and Ruby (Young) Hansen on Feb. 23, 1918, near Plainview. Her grandparents, the late Gideon and Catherine Young, were homestead farmers in Plainview in the Crawford Valley vicinity. Thelma attended all eight grades of school at District 122 and walked 1½ miles to school each day. In bad weather she would sometimes get a ride in a neighbor's horse and buggy. She attended one year of high school at Brunswick and boarded in town in bad weather. She then attended three years of high school at Plainview and had to walk 2¾ miles to Highway 20 to catch a ride into town. During the winter months Thelma stayed at her grandfather Young's and in other years, she did light housekeeping with two other girls in order to stay closer. Thelma graduated from high school in 1935 with a class of 56 students. The following year she ventured to California with her grandmother Hansen and was a personal maid and companion to a family in Beverly Hills for about two years. Thelma then went to live with the four Twosgaard sisters, originally from Crawford Valley in Nebraska, and attended the School of Cosmetology in Los Angeles in 1937 to become a manicurist. She then worked in Hollywood for four years. In 1940, Thelma married her friend from Nebraska, Munsey Wingate. They returned to Nebraska in 1945 and farmed at Tilden with the help of her parents for 20 years, during which time they had two children. In 1964, she moved to Norfolk and worked at Westgate Pharmacy for four years. On Oct. 13, 1968, she married Robert Beedle. Together they owned and operated Osmond Drug Store for 30 years, retiring in 1989. In January of 2004, Thelma became a resident of The Meadows retirement home in Norfolk and enjoyed all her new friends there. Thelma was active her whole life in the Methodist Church and loved to travel with her family. Her travels led her to Europe, Alaska, Canada, Mexico, Hawaii, Florida and countless fishing trips. She was a member of the senior center, hospital and Legion Auxiliary Women's Club, Community Club, Garden Club, TAO Club and the Hillside Pals Card Club. Thelma greatly enjoyed spending time with her family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and her many friends. She was preceded in death by husband, Bob Beedle, her parents, sister Wilma and an infant brother. Survivors include her son, A.M. "Skip" Wingate and wife Marilyn of Norfolk; a daughter, Karen Beatty of Lincoln; stepson Steve Beedle and wife Kathy of Hillsboro, Ore., and stepdaughter Donna Billesbach and husband Tom of Maryville, Mo.; six grandchildren, Shelli, Mike, Tyler, Troy, Melanie and Darrin; four stepgrandchildren, Jennifer, Amy, Kate and Erin; and 17 great-grandchildren.
