Thelma Louis (VanHeest) Korthals, 84, was born to Nick and Mary (Pavlis) VanHeest on January 23, 1931 in Douglas County, SD. She attended school in Corsica, SD. Her mother died when Thelma was four years old so she took care of her sister Anna until Anna passed away unexpectedly on March 30, 1947 at the age of 13-1/2. Thelma Louis (VanHeest) Korthals, 84, was born to Nick and Mary (Pavlis) VanHeest on January 23, 1931 in Douglas County, SD. She attended school in Corsica, SD. Her mother died when Thelma was four years old so she took care of her sister Anna until Anna passed away unexpectedly on March 30, 1947 at the age of 13-1/2. Thelma married Herman Korthals on December 31, 1948 in Mitchell, SD. She was a homemaker and waitress in Platte, SD for many years having worked at B&T Café, Bob’s Café and the Platte Bowling Alley Coffee Shop. She also folded and inserted papers and cleaned at The Platte Enterprise for many years. She took in ironing and cleaned house for others as well. She loved cooking and baking and trying new recipes. For many years she prepared a noon meal for her grandchildren and many of their friends since they lived just across the street from the school. Her specialty was pan-fried chicken. She also provided homemade monster cookies for Platte School teachers while her grandchildren were in school. She attended Olive Presbyterian Church and enjoyed helping serve meals at the Senior Citizens Center on Tuesdays and Thursdays. She loved to play bingo, ride her bike and go for walks. In 2006 the Korthals sold their home and moved into Platte Assisted Living where they remained for three years until moving to the Platte Care Center in August of 2009. Herman passed away on September 8, 2009. Thelma Louise Korthals of Platte, SD passed away at the Platte Care Center on Friday evening, January 22, 2016 just four hours short of her 85th birthday. Grateful for having shared in Thelma’s life: her two daughters: Sharon (Norm) Huizenga and Barb (Tom) Travis, all of Platte, SD; five grandchildren: Jamie (Paula) Huizenga, Pierre, SD; Jason (Tana) Huizenga, Platte, SD; Rebecca (Aaron) Raichel, Parker, CO; Rachel (Matt) Mueller and Shawn (Katie) Travis, all of Sioux Falls, SD; 15 great-grandchildren: Casi (Mitch) Popko, Rochester, MN; Caleb Huizenga, Pierre, SD; Maggie, Allie and Emmie Huizenga, Platte, SD; Emily Raichel, Parker, CO; Annika, Alisha, Amelia, Adelyn, Joseph and Alexis Mueller, Sioux Falls, SD; and Lucy, Teddy and Jacob Travis, Sioux Falls, SD; a sister-in-law, Donna VanHeest, Pico Rivera, CA; and several nieces and nephews.
