Description	:	Thelma Hough Good whose life spanned nine deceades of the rich history of the Shenandoah Valley, died April 24, 2012 at Page Memorial Hospital in Luray, Va., after a brief illness. She was 94. A resident of Page County since Shortly after the Great Depression, Mrs. Good was the beloved matriarch of a family including five daughters, 20 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren and 20 great-great grandchildren. Born 1917 in Shenandoah Junction, W. Va., Mrs. Good was the second oldest of the 12 children of Charles Franklin Hough and Lucy Viands. Thelma and her older sister, Minnie, met two boys from Stanley looking for work during the Depression on the apple orchards of the Eastern Panhandle. Minnie married Percy Good in 1930 and Themla married his brother Robert in 1931. Shortly thereafter Bob returned to Page County with his newlywed to raise a growing family. With the outbreak of WWII, Bob enlisted in the Navy. In 1944 Thelma 'Sue' as she was affectionately known for years in Page County-petitioned President Roosevelt to send her husband home-by now she was raising her daughters, Gladys, Edna (sis), twins Josephine & Geraldine (Gerry) and Elaine on her own. the goverment obliged and sent Bob back to Luray where he started a taxi business. Over the years, Mrs. Good worked at the Dovel Canning Factory and Casey's Blue Bell textile factory. But Thelma Sue earned her keep and her reputation with her hands in the garden and the kitchen. From the VFW Hall to the Modern Woodman, her green beans, pies and seet tea were legendary at community and family gatherings. Thelma enjoyed bus tours with her husband, Bob, upon his retirement from the Norfolk and Western Railraod. She enjoyed walking the East Luray neightborhood that she lived for more than 80 years. Most of call. Thelma looked forward to countless visits from three generations of grandchildren. Thelma is survived by two siblings, Chester Hough of El Paso, Texas and Norma Skinner of Bentonvill. Her husband Robert N. Good, died to 1995. Other survivors include her daughters Gladys of Knoxville, Tenn.; Edna of Stanley, Josephine of Luray, Gerry of Luray; and Elaine of Front Royal. She is interred at Evergreen Memorial Gardens in Luray alongside her beloved husband and other members of the Good family. Page News & Courier - 03 May 2012
