Description	:	Mrs. Thelmer E. Mitchell Vess, 93, of White Sulphur Springs, walked into the arms of her Heavenly Father on Wednesday, June 06, 2012, following an extended illness. Born January 22, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Horton and Rachel Ann Mitchell. She is preceded in death by her husband Mr. Charles H. Vess. Also preceding her in death are her brothers Shelly Mitchell, Carcel Mitchell, Willard Mitchell, and Freeman Mitchell; sisters, Alma Mitchell Adkins and Liddy Mitchell Bias; two stepchildren, Pandita Venetia Vess Rudnick (of White Sulphur Springs) and Langley Milton... Also preceding her in death are her brothers Shelly Mitchell, Carcel Mitchell, Willard Mitchell, and Freeman Mitchell; sisters, Alma Mitchell Adkins and Liddy Mitchell Bias; two stepchildren, Pandita Venetia Vess Rudnick (of White Sulphur Springs) and Langley Milton Vess (of Long Island, New York); granddaughter, Veriena Scott. Survivors include her twin brother, Elmer Edward Mitchell; stepdaughter Faye (Fagelia Vess) Gerrard of Nevada; children, Pamela Y. Scott Yuen of Honolulu, Hawaii and Girlonza N. Scott of Lewisburg, West Virginia; twelve grandchildren, Michele Vess, Patty Vess, Charles “Charley Boy” Vess, Angela Scott, Christopher Yuen, Rachel Yuen Nihi, Paul Yuen, TeriLynn Yuen Kim, Adrienne Yuen, Hunter Scott and Houston Scott; fourteen great grandchildren, Kimberly Scott, Adam Scott, Langley Martinez, Daniel Scott, Nevin Yuen, Chloe Yuen, Chandon Yuen, Lilinoe Nihi, Kealohi Nihi, Nanea Nihi, Kiakaha Nihi, Kiriana-Scott Yuen, Kaydon Yuen, and Won “Elias” Kim. She is also survived by nieces Verna Bell Pritchard, Eunice Ann Mitchell Berry, Edna Faye Mitchell Workman, Gatha Thompson Miller and Linda Mitchell Dotson; nephew, Elmer (Jr.) Mitchell …along with lots of grand nieces and nephews. As a child Thelma lived in Hernshaw, W. Va and then moved to Turtle Creek near Danville, W. Va. She worked as head cook for Woolworth in Charleston for approximately ten years. She attended the Turtle Creek Missionary Baptist Church where she loved singing in the choir. Following her marriage to Charles Vess, she moved to White Sulphur Springs where she attended the Pentecostal Holiness Church on Ingleside Avenue. She served as Youth Director, teacher of Sunday School, as well as involvement with the choir from 1952 until 1976. Following 1976 she attended the White Sulphur Springs Church of God where she taught Sunday School and sang in the choir. In her recent hears she has enjoyed attending church with Rev. Charles Feury of White Sulphur Springs. Thelma will be lovingly remembered for the many huge meals she has cooked (and shared), the numerous prayers she has prayed (and the numerous people she has prayed for) as well as her strong alto voice. Her reputation is one of a woman whose life has been highly successful, not by the standards of today’s business world, but by a much higher standard. She lived a life of Godly standards. She worked hard, she prayed much and she loved people with all of her heart. The scriptures that she repeatedly read became ingrained deeply into her soul. Those scriptures – those precepts – those principles - became her strength and her guide through life’s harsh storms. She will be missed but we are rejoicing that her days of pain are over and she is with the one whom she has loved the most, her Heavenly Father.
