BEHRENDS WAS CALLED FRIDAY, JAN. 29 He Had Submitted To A Surgical Operation At The University Hospital, Iowa City The death of Theodore Behrends occurred at the University hospital at Iowa City at 12:35 p.m., Friday, January 29. He had submitted to a surgical operation for the removal of a tumor a week before his death. Mr. Behrends had been in failing health for more than two years. Funeral services were held in his home in Scotch Grove last Sunday, January 31, and later at St. John's Lutheran church in Wayne township. Rev. Paul T. Gutknecht, pastor of the church had charge of the services. Burial was made at St. John's cemetery. The birth of Mr. Behrends at Reepsholt, Germany, July 24, 1877. He came with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bernhard Behrends to the United States when he was ten years old in 1887. The family settled in Scotch Grove township and it was here that Mr. Behrends grew to manhood and attended the rural schools. He was married to Minnie J. Cassens, a daughter of Gerhard Cassens, July 11, 1907. Their home was made in the vicinity of Onslow until 14 years ago when they removed to Scotch Grove township. Seven children were born to this union, two of whom died in infancy. The survivors include : Louis, of Amber; Mary, Mrs. Frank Snyder, of Cedar Rapids; Velma, Mrs. Vincent Simmons, of Prairieburg, and Anna and Henry at home. Mr. Behrends is also survived by his wife, one brother and two sisters, who are Gerhard Behrends and Mrs. Hans Klein of Owatonna, Minn., and Mrs. Garrett Julifs of Monticello; and three grandchildren. Among those who were present at the funeral from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. Hans Klein and Mr. and Mrs. Gerd Behrends of Owatonna, Minn., and Mrs. Margaret Lurkens of Kenyon, Minn., and Mr. and Mrs. Henry Cassens of Clermont, Minn.
